Roomster the sane buy

Featured Replies

Reading other posts of other models was the Roomster the last marque with the least hangups and the most sane buy? I am now petrified to buy a new Skoda with the problems of DSG gearboxes filled with the wrong oil, software and hardwire glitches, electronic nightmares of reading VCD codes and general frustration of understanding bluetooth connection, updating gps maps, and angry that I cannot play something basic as a CD.  After 7 years, I have had no problems with running issues breaking gearboxes, software bugs and emission controversy. I count my blessings!! Amen.

Bought my 58 reg Roomster new and only had servicing and tyres to pay for.

Level 3 trim 1.9tdi. Its been, and still is, a great car after 64,000 miles.

I would like to buy another new car but what do I buy?

If the Yeti was still made I think I would consider that but the Kodiak, Karoq, and Kamiq styling is not for me.

The Fabia Estate would suit my needs if it had a bigger engine and there are rumours that the Mark 4 Fabia will have the 1.5 engine option - just hope they continue to have the estate version but I think that will be end of this year or beginning of next.

Had to laugh at that one!  I haven't played a CD in car since my 2006 Octavia with in-boot CD autochanger went in 2010.  The replacement had an MDI interface that I plugged an HDD with 100's of my CDs ripped to MP3.  It had an inbuilt CD autochanger that was used precisely once - to play a National Trust audio guide CD as we followed the long drive to Calke Abbey.  When I specified my Roomster I ordered the Amundsen, not for the sat nav, but because it had an SD card slot.  Again all the downloads and ripped CD's fit on 3x32GB SD cards.  I never played a CD in 7 years.

For the record, however, I do cling to some old technology.  I still have 4 35mm film cameras that get occasional use, a load of LPs, 45's and cassettes and even a few 78's

DSG's were never 'filled with the wrong oil'.  It was just that it was found out pre 2012 which is over 8 years ago that there were issues with the Synthetic Oil that was used.

It was 'the right oil'  that they decided to use when developing the DQ200 DSG's.

That resulted in a World Wide Recall and in Europe a Service Campaign to change oil in those DSG'. DQ200's 2009-2012.

Since then there have been issueswith the need for changes in Software, but no 'Wrong Oil's' used.

So Service Campaign '34F7' started in 2014 on DQ200's 2009-2012.   & Service Campaign '34H5' which is a sofrware update on some from 2013-2016 which is after the oil changes at the factory.

Other issues are just that, ones that occur, just as there are various wee issues that can occur on early Roomsters right up until production stopped.

Maybe small in numbers as toi the vehicles getting them but still a possibility because Skoda / VW are never great fixing Snagging issues and as we know they pass them on to new models and the next generation of vehicles.  They are not great with wiring looms.

@edbostan

Does your 2013 Roomster have a DSG and did it require '34H5'?

No. I have the manual. I took advantage of a great deal in 2013 when Skoda were offering new Roomsters at £9600 instead of the £14400 list price as long it was Brilliant Silver or that pale blue and with the 86bhp 1.2 tsi engine and with panny roof, rear parking sensors, rear disk brakes, air con and SE spec. The ads in the 80s stated: 'If everything was as reliable as a Volkswagen.'

@edbostan

It was 'If everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen'  '( Golf) '.

Which actually meant without the VW Spin that it could be pretty crap really.

Especially the model / actresses life.

No-one would have taken notice only for the girl with the squeaky earring. The campaign must have worked because we remember it

If only everything was as reliable as a VW...  Hmmm...

In 45 years driving I have only ever had 3 cars (all 2-5yrs old at the time) that broke down and left me by the roadside :

  1. 1981 VW Polo that let me down twice - first with a blocked jet in the carb, second with a failed oil pump
  2. 1988 VW Polo that let me down once - failed fuel pump
  3. 2000 Renault Megane - pulley sheared off the alternator

Those are the only 2 VW's I ever had!  From memory I've had Morris, Hillman, 4 Fords, Chrysler, Citroen, 2 VWs, Fiat, Renault, 2 Nissans, Toyota, 3 Skodas plus various Honda and Kawasaki motorcycles.  Most or all had minor niggles but none except the 2 VWs and the Renault left me by the roadside.

So, if everything was as reliable as my VW's I would have been left by the roadside not 4 times but around 30 times.

Hi all, I've also been looking at Roomsters recently and it seems like a very cool car. Hijacking this thread a bit to ask about the real boot size. What's the length of the boot when rear seats are taken off and the front seats pushed as far front as they go? I'm hoping to also be able to sleep in the car, and haven't found this info anywhere. Cheers

With the driver's front seats pushed forward the measurement from the lip of the boot to the back of driver's seat is around 6ft or 183 cm so you could sleep in it if you are average height

I have been hoping to do the same but our Roomster has been ‘remodelled’  (not our fault).

There is a disability/wheelchair site that gives internal dimensions if you Google it.

From memory of my own measurings I think I’m right in saying it’s 120 cm to the edge of the boot floor/start of rear footwell (seats removed). I’m not sure about the length to the front seats as far forward as possible, but, the front passenger seat can be cranked back pretty flat to butt up to the boot floor. We have transported IKEA sofa beds that way.

That was going to be where he-who-is-taller-than-me was going to sleep, with me (5’2”) on the driver’s side, with the seat fully forward.

All the best
