Octavia VRS mk3 2015 - AFS spreading

Featured Replies

Hi out there,

Hope someone can guide me to solve an annoying behavour of the adaptive function on my frontlights.

When in "Auto" the lefthand ligt is often but not always pointing hard to the left.

It´s very obvious in foggy or damp conditions, but it also means that the road isn´t lit up very well.

When I do turns, the light moves ok with the other side, but it´s nominal setting seems to be far out to the left.

At standstill both headlights point directly forward, as the do a symmetrical "dance" at startup.

Driving in normal beam mode (not auto), they point straight forward as well, so thats what I normally run to get a decent light on the road.

I´m kind of a DIY guy, and would like to give it a cheap try before going to the dealer.

Since the headlight is able to point forward, I guess it may be a sensor issue of perhaps the actuator in the lamp itself which is faulty.

In best case some kind of resetting could be the cure, but I havn´t found anything on this topic in forums so far.

Appreciate any suggestion how to approach this before going to the dealer.

Thanks in advance :)

I don't think that everybody ever found the answer to AFS issues.  I had the same problem on my 2016 Octavia Scout.  The system is speed sensitive and from discussions from the local dealer and having seen a technical bulletin from Skoda on the issue, the behaviour is not described as a fault.  The headlights are meant to be sensitive to direction of the steering-wheel and are meant to give you additional visibility and lighting up the edge of the corner you are travelling around.  The annoyance seems to be that the lights do not straighten up until you speed up (as opposed to taking direction from the steering wheel that should probably happen).

Two potential workarounds:

1) Set-up your driving profile (ie go into Eco, Normal, Sport mode) and select Individual.  Select "Sports mode" for Headlights.  This improves the reaction of the headlights (but doesn't cure the issue)

2) Take the highlights off AUTO mode and use them in normal mode - which you seem to have discovered already.

There might be a firmware update for the Lighting Left and Lighting Right modules, but good luck in getting a Skoda garage to update your car's firmware!!!!

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Guess thats the reason why I dont find this topic discussed anywhere. Wont spend time or money trying to cure the issue.

Unfortunately my car doesn't feature driveprofile settings, so I guess I have to live with it as long as I own this car.

Thanks for saving my time! 😊

@Bodz AFS has city and rain modes afaik and both can be disabled via coding. Honestly I'm sure I did this on mine when I first got it (nearly 4 years ago) now and never noticed it since. You will need VCDS or OBD Eleven.

If your headlights are fine when not in auto, it's almost certainly AFS.

@ahenners, it makes good sence, since it's noticeable at lower speeds. Still strange though, that it seems to be the left one only (closest to center of road at right hand drivning) that's pointing to the side.

I've tried to disable rainmode but can't say I see any difference.

Got the OBD dongle but only the basic version rights. Guess I'll upgtade to the Pro and give it a try - may be usefull to do other mods.

Thanks!

On the OBD pro verion there is an alignment reset but I do not know if you need specific headlight equipment to realign. Or if it just resets everything back to standard. I would also do a full back up of all control units before you alter anything.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that Pro Version and see what makes sense.
