Clay bar or Paint cleaner

Featured Replies

I am trying to remove tar spots from the body work and the alloys. I have the Meguiars 3 step set and have tried using the Paint cleaner. It will remove most of the tar on the bodywork, but need a lot of effort, but it won't remove the tar on the wheels even after 3 attempts.

Would a clay bar be better for the job, and would it take less effort??

Clay bar is what you need with lubricant or just use soapy water.

Margerine :D

Or bug and tar remover. Then cleanse and wax after you have done either

I clayed my car at the weekend, the bad areas (Below the door trims, behind wheel arches and sooty ar$e) take a bit longer, Working in 2 foot square areas with plenty of lube and my car felt like glass afterwards.

I would say that 10-20 passes with the clay clears most contaminents.

The only downside is being blackmagic its hard to see the particles, but either fingertips or if you aint that sensitive a tip from rich at polished bliss is to pop your hand in a sandwich bag and run it over the surface.

When claning my wheels. I initially used Wonder Wheels, washed this off. Then I used Meguiars metal polysh. Worked a treat, removed all baked in stains, brake dust and tar spots.

Then last of all I just applied some wax for added protection.

Now when I wash the wheels, no longer do I need to use the wonder wheels, just wash off the excess brake dust ( I seem to get more brake dust on the rear wheels than the front), rinse off and then use a paper towel to dry off the excess water. Job done.

Any baked in stains just reapply the metal polysh.

No such problems, Octy is metalic silver.

I was going to use the paint cleaner on the roof and bonnet, and the clay bar on the other (more difficult) panels.

I have Autoglym alloy wheel cleaner which i sometimes use. I may try this first, and then use a clay bar for the remaining stains.

I was looking at the Meguiars Clay detailing bar, at
