I didn't read anything saying the OP did all that. Instead we got a nice story about how easy it is to get a record mileage with AC on full blast. Give me a break...

I've got the whole three hours drive on dashcam if you really want to analyze it.

For a lot of it, I was in the tail end of rush hour traffic - average was around 50-60mph. Another 30 miles or so of roadworks on the M1 so again 50-60mph. There was a battle for "first place" between a motor transporter and a lorry in front of me so I held back and chilled out behind them - not too close though.

I had the option of sitting in the car chilling out to some good music (Nine Inch Nails !) with the aircon on or sitting at home sweltering in the heat so took my time.

The last 20 miles were solo with nothing in front of me and a nice steady 56mph.

I think the key thing was that the traffic was flowing at a slow but pretty constant pace which really helps and we could get in to discussions about hot air density / fuel air ratio etc but I leave that for work ....

Well driven. You obviously enjoyed relatively flowing traffic , used a combination of smooth steady throttle and read the road well to avoid wasting momentum and fuel. Ignore the doubters and critics who seem to get a buzz out of 'having their say' on this site.

@BBDom, I am curious whether your manual 1.5tsi has had the software fix applied to fix the 'kangarooing' since others seem to think it worsens consumption?

That wasn't the case with our manual 1.5TSi Karoq which managed a best of 63mpg from factory and 66mpg after the software fix.

I asked for the fix at the last service and was assured they had done it (and asked me to sign a worksheet that had a firmware update listed). The car seemed a bit better when pulling away and it certainly doesn't appear to have done the economy any harm.

I could not match the 83 mpg figure with my 1.4tsi manual, in the very best of local Aus conditions and no a/c on I'd still be 10 mpg adrift. If I matched the average speed I'd probably be close to 15 mpg adrift. No hypermiling or dangerously close drafting (our interstate trucks do continuous 100 kph speeds and you have to allow about a safe 3 second gap or you may end up running into a 'roo in the middle of the road the truck had the ground clearance to miss)

I have driven in the UK on moving busy motorways and A-roads in similar conditions described by the OP and together with the benefits of Active Cylinder Deactivation I can understand how the remarkable displayed consumption could be achieved (even allowing for a possible slightly optimistic reading). The traffic really is nose to tail there , I had to adjust because every time I left my 'safe' gap another vehicle felt the need to dive into it.

I thought the loan Fabia manual 1.0tsi I drove just over a year ago could be capable of 90+mpg in optimal warm conditions (flat road and not exceeding 65kph).

I'd turned off the a/c in 40+ deg C temps to prove it once but after a bit I was saying "bu##er this for a game of soldiers" and turned it back on. That 3 cylinder engine is really economical but not available in an Octavia here.

Scores on the doors for this tank of fuel.

624 miles on 44.93L of petrol - works out at 63.14mpg

Not a million miles off the 63.9mpg reported by the on board computer - around 1.2% out

DSC_0005sm.jpg

1004 kilometres and still a few litres left in the tank, brilliant.

An ambition of mine with the 1.4tsi to better a 1000 km.

Got close a couple of times but chickened out as I had 3 others in the car on long trips and did not want to run out of fuel somewhere remote on a 40 deg day.

Maybe one day when I am by myself with a bit of tme on my hands
