Automatic tailgate using springs attached to gas struts

Featured Replies

I saw a post on a Mk3 owners club on Facebook using these. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114336908702
With these fitted you can open the boot from the key fob.

Has anybody had these and run into any issues?

Looking around at parts I think it’s possible to make these myself for under £30, has anybody had a go at it?

Might be Internet folklore but the consensus when these boot questions come around is that they put extra pressure on the boot latch, increasing failure rates and they have the potential to twist the hatch and shatter the rear window. No experience of it myself

Don’t fancy it myself. Watching your boot open and crash into that low ceiling in the multi-story? Not for me 😉

I did it on my Octavia estate using die springs, I bought a packet of 10 for around £10, they cost buttons.

It works really well and is a great convenience when carrying bulky/heavy items to load.

Your gas struts need to be in good condition for them to work. I think they have an easier job on the hatchback to the estate but may have got that backwards.

The underground car park problem is not going to happen unless you are both lazy and unattentive.

A single press on the remote unlocks the boot as usual but does not unlatch it, you have to use the handle as normal, a long press will open it automatically, I only ever use the function when its needed as described above and would know not to do so with an obstruction overhead, someone that uses it all the time through laziness could make a mistake.

If you’re not going to unlatch remotely, what’s the point in the mod then?

For the times that I do.

Boredom, interest, curiosity, something to do...............

Take your pick.

If you fit air horns to your car then you probably toot everybody initially because of the novelty and pleasure it brings you, eventually you just use the horn when you need it knowing it is more effective.

You got a link for those springs or do you know the size you used?

I’ve done the gas strut mod for the bonnet, cost around £25, half the price of superskoda.

Can no longer view the listing but this was the title, the cost was £7.95 for 5, I have an optimistic memory!!

And for the bonnet strut I bought a pair for £7.28 including 2 different sets of ball end fittings M6 and M8 but people seem happy to pay the Superskoda price.
