Cost of extending warranty

Featured Replies

Hi there

I am currently looking at a 27 month old Kodiaq at a local dealership (2.0 TSI 190 DSG Edition). I understand that the 3 year warranty will expire in May 2021 and I will probably look to buy an extended warranty at that point. Does anyone have any idea what Skoda charge for extending the warranty for another two years on a second hand car?

Also, it is apparently shortly due a service in September having currently done 31,247 miles. I'm presuming that will be a 30,000 mile service which I think is a minor service. Is there anything else that should be done at that sort of mileage (brake fluid etc)?

Many thanks

Here you are.

Brake Fluid is recommended at 3 years. Or it could get checked for water content at the 'Free Brake Check'.

As to Major and Minor / Interim Services Skoda have changed that again.

Pay for the Service, pay extra for parts used. Rather Expensive charge for the parts.

Skoda won't let you extend the warranty until the car is almost 3 years old - I've just tried it last week and it spat me out. My dealer confirmed that this is the case.

I guess it's because they want to know the current mileage and history before they'll issue a price.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately the warranty links do not allow me past the initial stage as the car is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Presumably it would allow me to get further if the warranty was up next week rather than next year.

i hadn’t appreciated that the service prices excluded parts. Ouch!

Thanks, I found that too. I was hoping that someone on here might have done this recently and then be able to share what they paid. The garage can offer me an RAC Platinum Plus warranty which costs £599 for one year, £799 for two or £999 for three. Ouch, again!

Doesn’t seem too bad for 3 years peace of mind, I suppose it depends on mileage and items covered.

i suppose it depends how risk averse you are.

Warranty is an insurance. You pays your money and takes your chance.

Personally I'd prefer to put the money into a separate account and have it there if needed to cover a big ticket expense, rather than pay a warranty company and never claim.

Or even worse, make a claim and have it rejected due to one of many, many clauses. Too many used car warranties have more holes in them than the Titanic.

You're paying over £20,000 for a used car. Ask for the upcoming service to be included as part of your pre-purchase negotiation.

The cars first brake fluid change is due on its third birthday, this is an extra charge over and above the service.

What parts of the service required will depend on it's previous service intervals and history. At a minimum you're looking at oil and an oil filter, at most you can add the pollen filter, air filter and spark plugs.

Be sure to ask the dealer what the DSG service interval is, that's always good for a laugh, I don't think a UK Skoda franchised dealer has ever provided the same information twice!

That's the all important point - if I were feeling particularly risk-averse and believed that they would pay up then it could be tempting but although I have been able to claim on one (3 yr old car from Skoda sold with extended warranty*) it took considerable application. The industry is geared up and quite expert in not paying up.

Back in the days when Skoda was still in denial about knackered dual mass flywheels on the 1.9PD.

Yes be very careful with what the warranty covers, from memory wear and tear is a big cop out, and some don’t cover electrical faults, some don’t seem to cover anything that may go wrong😀, as Silver says, you pays your money....

If buying new I always buy the extra 2 years factory warranty as I think It gives peace of mind and is transferable if you don’t keep the car that long, though this doesn’t help the OP. Although so far I’ve only had to claim for an electrical fault on the Yeti at 3 years 3 days old, though I don’t know how much that would have been to sort out (much head scratching and fun at dealers)

Used to love the 130 PD (Lots of torque) in my Passat and didn’t suffer from any ills fortunately.

My friend at work had a lovely Mk 1 PD Superb (almost identical to the Passat) till very recently until a drunk driver hit it when parked🙁

I once had cause to claim on an aftermarket warranty. Several years ago on a 2002 E46 BMW 320d SE, suffered the (now well documented) infamous inlet swirl flap ingestion issue, i.e. it lunched the entire engine.

Don't panic I thought, that's what warranty is for. Several days and many phone calls later they paid out...

...£48 for the inlet manifold that housed the faulty swirl flap. Leaving me the remaining £7,000 bill for a new engine.

Hidden in the T&C's, "consequential damaged not covered".

Needless to say I won't be buying an aftermarket warranty again anytime soon.

@silver1011 🤬 I can see why you don’t like them then!

As they say, the devils in the detail.

I should add it was many years ago and it was a used car garage's third party warranty that came with the sale of the car.

Hopefully things have moved on since then, and warranties purchased unconnected from a garage provided policy might be a little more water tight.
