Canton - distortion from center speaker

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I listen to a lot of podcasts in the car and have noticed the last few nights quite a bit of distortion coming through the front centre dashboard speaker which seems to be really prominent when playing speech and at certain frequencies of that speech.

I've had a fiddle with the various settings, reset the equalizer to flat 0's across the board and reset the fader to dead centre, I've also disabled the front/driver focus as well as canton surround. The aux and bluetooth volumes are set to medium although i have left the subwoofer at 8. This seems to have helped but hasn't eliminated the issue entirely, wondered if i am missing anything in terms of settings?

The head unit is the billy basic Bolero - it has a few daft issues (reguarly forgets where it is in a playlist etc) so im guessing its on quite an old firmware - i understand this cant be readily updated without a trip to the dealer though.

Cheers

The only time I have ever heard this kind of thing was in two areas:

1) If the edge of the speaker cone has seperated itself from the support, backing or magnet.

2) If the speaker is wired up the wrong way and instead of pushing out sound in the correct direction, is sucking in the speaker - which will cause distortion, a 180 degree phase issue in the stereo image and ultimately, destroying of the speaker itself.

Its not a constant issue, only very occasional - it only seems to really be highlighted by speech rather than music and then only at certain pitches of voice.

I'll try and get a recording of it and upload it

Unless you have upgraded your Octavia to a mk3 and not updated your profile then you have posted in the wrong section.

I don't think the mk3 came with  Bolero and Canton.

I've got a Mk3 now - updated signature but must have forgotten to change my profile.

Definitely has Canton, head unit looks like this (not mine, just a google image search), i thought that was a bolero but may be wrong:

OEM 5E0919605 Front Panel for Skoda Octavia 3 - Bolero 5,8 inch ...

Well I have looked at the images in the online manuals for Bolero and Amundsen from 2014 and they look identical?

I just have a 'Swing' radio in mine so I'm no help I'm afraid.

It was just I cannot recall anyone in the UK talking about a Bolero/Canton combination in any post so I may well be wrong.

Would have assumed it would have been Amundsen minimum.

My centre speaker sometimes feels like it's vibrating, but I'm not sure if that's because I'm listening to something with a fair bit of bass in it

It did, I bought a new one in 2015 and specced it with Bolero, I didn't bother with Amundsen.

Im not an expert on the head units, so I've taken a photo of the software info:

Chances are you either have a loose speaker cover which vibrates at certain frequencies associated with speech. Next time it happens try pushing gently on the speaker grille and see if that stops it.

If the speaker was out of phase it would not rattle but would sound quieter than the others and flat.

Chances are it might be the voice coil going and need a new speaker. I am lead to believe the new speaker is fairly cheap from Skoda and easy to replace.
