Auto Main beam

Featured Replies

I have never had a car that does this before and not driven in real dark yet; handbook is less than clear!

With lights on auto, if I press down the indicator it goes to auto main beam, press again and it goes off? Presumably on dip?

How reliable is this and what is actually happening ?

On a long windy road there may be an oncoming car a long way away which will be hidden by a bend after a bit and then come into view again nearer, at what stage will they dip automatically?

On sections of dual c'way with no-one coming the other way, will it go on and off ok? You sometimes come across trucks where their headlights lights are hidden by the crash barrier but if my lights are on main beam it would be dazzling the driver?

To cut a long story short - some folk love the feature, while others find it does not perform as well as a competent driver.

I think your comment above alludes to a concern that the auto system cannot anticipate the road ahead as well as you can.

You are correct

The system on my B-Xenon Golf always seems to work perfectly, dipping the lights before any approaching driver flashes me, and also when coming up behind other drivers. I understand your point about lorry drivers being higher up and being bothered by my lights, but in practice have never noticed a problem. If there IS a problem it's very easy to take control.

Time will tell how well my new Karoq's lights will match them!

I have just downloaded the latest Karoq maual to my computer so I could look up some settings. Interestingley this seems to be for the coming facelift Karoq as the steering wheel and its controls are different in the pictures, and as I have seen on what is predicted to be included in the changes.

I went to the lighting section and there no longer seems to be any mention of this auto main beam operation, so it may have been discontinued? Reliability issues?

You can choose which model year manual you want to download

https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Model/Karoq_NU

Looking at the latest 2020 manual, light assist is on page 52.

So it is, didn't notice the headlamp symbol woith A in.

😬Got it fitted, excellent, think it uses the GPS to identify cars location so does not use full beam in town. You activate the auto main beam by pushing the headlamp stalk forwards, activation confirmed by white headlight symbol in dash. It's better than manual control, it never looks away to fiddle with the radio, talk to passengers or adjust

the multitude of driver aids,

Use t always.

I think it's more likely to use dip beam when you're doing 40 or less, and when there's street lighting?

What is required to get it fitted? I've got 2019 sportline (full LED lights) but it only has front assist (no lane/side assist)

You need the front facing camera mounted in front of the rear view mirror. Sounds like you don't have it.

If there is a front facing camera in my car, it is ashame it doesn't also record like a dashcam and do two jobs at once

There are more road and pavement users than just cars / vans / lorries / motorbikes.

Muppets with auto dip headlights can be a right PITA.  Dip do not dazzle. I knew when they first came on the go that they were not that 'Simply Clever'.

I have Intellilux LED Matrix headlights.

It does not take that long to find how hopeless they can be for the consideration of other road users when other road users go for full on Headlight flashing or 4x4's / HGV's etc lighting you up with roof spotlights or LED bars.
