What’s this pipe for?

Featured Replies

Hi all, can anybody please shed any light on this? I’ve just bought a 2012 octavia 1.6 tdi although the mot was not due till end Oct I decided to get it done and serviced. It’s passed but the garage pointed out the small pipe blocked off with a screw and a small amount of diesel leaking from the open end. Question is why would someone of done this?? Is there a common problem?? I’ve tried to google it but come up with nothing, car runs fine apart from Sean’s a bit flat below 2k but as never had the little 1.6 before I’ve nothing to compare with as are they all flat at low Rev’s. Many thanks for any help or advice offered. Regards Ray

That is a fantastic question and I’m ashamed to say I didn’t look, will have to remove cover when it stops chucking it down and take a picture. 🤦‍♂️

Pretty wet here at the minute. Id go so far to say very wet. If you trace the other end then I or you or others can trace a parts diagram - hopefully. The other possibility is someone looks with same engine car!!

Try to read the part number off the hose while you're there, the bit after TR-KRS-03L and before what looks like  005 AF. Can't tell if it's just dirt hiding the middle bit, or its worn off.

Looks  a bit like it might connect here (but I don't know what that is):

Yes it definitely connects there, but didn’t want to connect it back up as someone must of done that blanking off for a reason and no idea why, garage says it may be a boost pipe but think they where guessing themselves ???

Being a diesel one has to speculate that it may be something to do with trying to stop the EGR system from doing its thing.

Possibly but that is definitely above my rate of intelligence 🤔

I'd say if this pic here is representative of your engine @Wino is spot on - part of EGR system, which if I am following correctly ends up going to the valve module near the intake manifold around front of engine.  For your next question - exactly what that specific pipe does - I do not know but someone on here may do!

Christ that's a long and meandering path it takes! 😆

It's looking like that part number that I could almost read might be 03L131605AF, the last item 30 listed here: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/octavia/oct/2012-663/1/131-131040/#30

Google imaging that number gives a few piccies of the whole vac pipe set-up which is a scary looking thing.

Doesn't help explain its functional role except in so far as it appears on the ETKA page relating to EGR, as @TheClient says.

"Probably doesn't work right, or at all, if it's blanked off" might be a good working assumption.

Any fault lights? Guess not or you would probably have mentioned it.  Would be tempted to leave as is if no faults are apparent; previous owner may have done you a favour.

Here is a top view of my 1.6 tdi engine. The pipe in question does indeed connect to the place suggested in Wino's picture above. The pipe is the one to the left of the rusty lump, running from the back down to the horizontal plastic pipe.
