Poor show at the Pod

Featured Replies

So I went to the Central day at Santa Pod this weekend, surrounded by a million Fords and a few drag specials. The last time I ran the car standard, I did a 16.69 quarter which I was fairly happy with, so was hoping to do better this time.

Wasn't best pleased when the guy photographing the cars as they came into the club area lowered his camera and shook his head in disapproval as I drove past, normally wouldn't have been bothered but had a very sore head at the time...

So, 3 runs on the strip - against a highly modified mk2 escort running a cosworth lump, an Evo 7 and finally to add insult to injury, a V8 capri with nitrous and a supercharger. You won't be too surprised to hear I lost all three runs (although the evo stuffed it and only came in about 20m ahead of me, bet he was gutted :D)

So, since the last time I went, I've got better tyres, better suspension, a remap to about 175bhp and since then, a full Blueflame System - so probably over 180bhp. And could I get my time under 16 seconds? Could I bo**ocks. 16.26 was the best I could manage

Now I blame this in part to my shovel feet and lack of sleep, and a herculean drinking session for my mate's birthday the night before. But mostly, I just couldn't get the power down. Which surprised me, because on the road, I never seem to have a problem. However on the strip, I think I was only surpassed for cumulative smoking efforts by the jet car!

Anybody else got a remapped vRS without ESP, and had similar problems trying to launch it down a strip? I'm sure with practice I could get it under 16 seconds, but don't think doing that on a regular basis would be considered to be showing "mechanical sympathy" to my clutch, lol

On a side note, really made me want to build a lightweight drag car on the cheap, there were a couple of mad creations there including fiat 126s and a mid engined, supercharged and nitrous'd mk1 fiesta that were running 10-12 second quarters! Anybody know if you can drop a hyabusa engine in the back of a Rapid 136 Coupe?

Sorry to hear you're not seeing much improvement but from my experience getting the standard car's power down can prove entertaining. I'm happy though as the available power when on the move is very good.

Hi

Try holding not more than 1500rpm at launch, let it bog slightly to kill any wheelspin before it starts and you should get away cleanly. Works well in the standard car where I see consistent v low 8s 60mph runs.

The remapped car must pull like a monster from almos no revs, so why waste 2 or 3 seconds lighing up the fronts when you can be fully cluthced in and hooked up in 1 second taking it easy. Worth a try next time you are there.

was this on sunday 23rd?? (my birthday may i add!) because my friend was there and sent my other friend a pic of a capri and he wanted to know what was in it, but she didn't know, so I'm wondering if it's the one you mentioned!! will let him know whats in it! he has a capri and wants to make it that fast  it ran a 9.4 or something didn't it?

I have no complaints in regular driving, on the way there I was having a play with my mate in his Saph 4x4 and unless he got his revs over 5k, my car was putting up a pretty good effort. Never had any complaints with mid-range drivability or how competent the car is at overtaking, just would be nice to have a bit more go off the line. That's diesels for you I guess. Or my rubbish launch control. Or both. :D

a work collegue went to the pod last weekend and said there was a really quick fabiaVRS there , did you see it or did he get his figures wrong ? he mentioned 109 mph across the line but i might be wrong

The one time I did get a clean start, was the time I did the 16.26. But even then, the car breaks traction in first and second. Think I need stickier tyres ;)

I was the only vRS that I saw there, but I left at 2pm-ish. If it was me he saw, I would have been recongnisable from my number plate - it's ** JUT :D

can't ask him now as hes gone back working at another part of the dealership group

There were two Capris that were seriously kitted out, one in yellow and one in brown and primer, they were both running V8s on nitrous, but I believe on was supercharged and one was turbo'd. When I was sat in the queue next to the yellow one, and he was revving his engine before the race, all of the trim in my car was rattling, including the bits that don't normally rattle from the sub in the boot! Damn it was loud. I really want a lairy V8 :D

secong gear starts are the way to go-Start in second with not to many revs pretend your out with granny and dont wanna shake her up lol this delicate aproach gets best traction and does not abuse clutch too much and is alot quicker than a brutal aproach

Not a bad time, but under 16 secs is possible, toxxin got mid 15's iirc in his old Ibiza TDi Sport which was running an AmD map.

But the 1/4 mile isnt realy suited to diesels is it? To many gearchanges and lack of revs usually gives it a fair disadvantage.
