Engine starts with a thump

Featured Replies

Car is a MY07 1.9TDI  MK2 Octavia estate 160,000 miles. Starts perfectly, and I do mean perfectly, when cold/cool but when hot starts instantly but with a thump and and an engine shake. I have to admit I have lived with this for a year or so but it is getting annoying. Battery is good.

Any thoughts?

Ditto on my 06, has to be fuel/oil getting into combustion chamber somehow, injector/valve seals.

Would a weak glow plug cause this?

All 4 of my glow plugs are open circuit-burned out and it starts fine even in Scottish winters, it's the hot starts that begin with a burst of energy.

I had exactly the same problem with mine when I bought it and a new battery sorted it. I see that you state that your battery is fine. I’ve also read on here that a faulty starter motor can give problems with a hot start as well.

Does your BKC start in 1/4 turn both hot & cold or does it crank a little before starting when hot?

With the PD engines "quick start" feature it should always start in 1/4 turn, there is a stupid  functionality whereby the engine when hot has to crank faster than a certain RPM threshold but not when cold, a slightly weak battery which will start the engine at minus 20°c in 1/4 turn will struggle to start a hot engine & that may be the cause of your shaking.

J.R. interesting comment. The engine starts 1/4 turn hot or cold and doesn't seem to struggle but I will pay a little more attention over the coming weeks.

It does sound like a dribbling injector in which case.

I prefer to think of it as like a Coffman starter, she always starts first turn.
