lowering spring issue ?

Featured Replies

hi all i try to keep it short. car was fitted with apex 35mm drop one spring was cracked on one side so for mot garage  changed both sides for new springs h&r 35mm drop new shocks new innner and outer trackrod ends drop links etc . I went to get car tracked and console bushes are shot on pass side. the car scrapes on small bumps that it never used to even when fully loaded and there is a gap where the track rod end drivers side sits so i assume its because its so low ? how can this be i checked part numbers and they are suppose to be 35mm drop puzzled specially with the new shocks etc

any help would be great

i can put pics on if needed

They didn’t give you springs for the MK2 by mistake by any chance? Big difference in the weight at the front of the two I reckon.  Just a quick thought.

good point.... i did ring larkspeed and checked part number they said they was for 35mm drop mk1 vrs.. i was expecting the car to maybe be lower or higher due to changing company but there is something not right here... ill get some pics up to help see ride height issue...

for sure somethings not right fabias can be lowered to a 50mm i have read but no one ever mentions issues with the track rod end being pulled down

ill post pics now

heres  a wider view apex 35mm on back and h&r 35mm on front

That looks quite extreme. I'd be quite worried about the sump if that was my car.

Possibly you can claw some height back with a set of new front top mounts but if you're doing that, swap out the springs anyway.

I'm baffled as to what you mean by the track rod end being pulled out of its slot?

Your rear dampers look like they are missing the plastic dust tubes - at least in the pic of the passenger side.

thanks for replying, Iam for sure worried about how low it specially after all the new parts i have changed. where the track rod end bolts up rather then being flush it has pulled down about 1-2cm when car was up in air the so when hitting slight bumps it sounds shocking... but thats not the issue. its how low the car sits with 35mm h&r springs new shocks. iam gunna buy some apex 35mm like car was on at the start. would new top mounts raise the car up ? i will get a picture when partner and kids in car its shocking. just cant figure out why i have took part number and spoke with larkspeed and it comes back as 35mm drop. madness car was fine on old parts :(

yes buddy noted. had car for 9 months so have been changing so many parts to freshen car up, they will be replaced with new shocks in the next few months but need to sort this low ride height and track rod end issue. i have noticed drivers side bump stop is battered. this  wont affect height thought just compression ?

could the garage of missed any parts are to cause this issue ?

No they are just bump stops that hold up the plastic tubes and have no effect on height at all. It's a very common Fabia thing that the bump stops rot away and allow the dust tubes to drop.

It is impossible for the track rod ends to drop in their taper holes unless they are not tightened. That is pretty concerning.

i will replace them when new springs are fitted.... in my mind its like its a 50mm drop or something as such... just wanted to double check there is no other issue before throwing more money on the car changing springs etc.

i wish i had took a picture. the car was getting tracked at kwick fit hunter machine  it looked well tighten but the pass side seemed ok abet at a funny angle. if i jack car up now it will pull it flush so no point taking pic. i thought it was lose but the guy says it because of how low it is.... kind wish i didn't chose the cheapest garage.

the car is in for new console bushs tomoz so will ask them to look to see if they can see anything. lesson learned if it the springs

No matter how mush force is applied to the track rod end taper it can't move in the taper unless it's loose. It's very hard to say what's going on without seeing it. It's probably just being articulated at a mad angle due to the low ride height.

Yeah, best idea. Only the springs can affect the height of the car so it must be that. Dampers have no effect on the height.

would new top mounts raise the car up ?

Nope.

It honestly sounds like whoever did the work on your car is a bloody cowboy.

ill try squeeze under car to see if can get a pic. its a shame because cost 180 quid to fit new shocks springs, i supplied the parts.  i done the inner and outer track rod ends but the garage have had it apart to the springs. they are a mad angle, the car is getting new console bushes tomoz i have gone with cupra solid bushes, anything to advise them on ? direction angle ?  cars off for tracking afterwards so ill be able to get a pic of track rod end and of bushes if they have fitted them correctly

really grateful for your insight, really baffled me tbh

thanks again

You are more than welcome.

The Cupra console bushes should be fitted with the flush side towards the back of the car and with the hexagon hole flat at the top and bottom.

Are you saying that the track rods are at a significant upright (inclined) angle with the vehicle sitting on the ground?

If so it will play havoc with the bump steer.

I did worse when young and thinking that it looked cool

:):):) full of help :):)

that's great i will show the garage this

yeah seems to be worse on drivers side (hence the bad banging noise) pass side is at angle but no gap.

its mad feels so soft when pushing hard almost like a shock is blown more noticeable of left turn but that's a different story

either going back to apex 35mm or something less like 25?

i have read so good reviews about h&r so didn't hesitate when i see them, wish i just stuck to apex spring was cracked and drivers side shocker blown millions time better then these.

ill message tomorrow once bushes are done when i get tracking done later on ill get a picture of the track rod end when its up i sky

i have already asked garage to see if they can see anything up

ill post more tommoz and show the new garage your post

they seem to know what they was on about advised cupra bushes so fingers crossed

thank again been a great help :)

had this issue for the last 6 weeks so glad i asked for advise

bushes are done, one sits in a little more then being  flush but are flat which is good. major difference in how car is :)  handles bumps now rather then hitting so hard. steering is a lot nice. car only had a slight pull to left if wheel is let go so went to have tracking done hoping to get her straight.... made it worse pulls quite hard and needs constant pressure to keep straight, luckily have geo care from kwick fit. but after waiting over a hour to get it done i didn't have time to get it back i rang them and the and asked the manger to test drive it  but hes only next on Monday.. i don't understand why car drove perfectly straight before having all parts changed. only thing that is not new(3months ) is the hubs and antiroll bar. i can post a picture of the tracking results if that's any help to anyone

thanks again for any help :P
