Engine hesitation/cutting out

Featured Replies

Got a tricky one to diagnose, maybe someone has had similar experiences or can help.

1.9 BKC no DPF.

Within the first 2-3 miles from a cold start whilst driving the engine exhibits split second hesitations lasting several seconds, this is a one time event in a drive.  Perhaps hard cuts is a better way to describe it as it's a harsh event unlike rapidly releasing and depressing the accelerator.

At first I thought accelerator pedal sensor worn, however catching it early with partial depression, foot to floor doesn't stop it.

No EML or DTC.

Engine starts fine cold or hot and issue only happens after a cold start.

There is no performance degradation before or after the event.

Your input welcome.

Finally fixed the snag after checking fuel system without results, thanks in part to winter weather.

Car became progressively worse with winter temperature drop which led me to suspect there was a thermal variable involved.

At -1.5C it ran like a box of bricks falling down a flight of stairs on anything more than partial accelerator depression, rather than ease off I kept my foot down for 30 seconds or more until it cleared up.

This time a scan found DTC 18074 - Injector valve cylinder 1; circuit malfunction.

That was the key I had been waiting for, disconnecting the injector wiring connector and measuring injector resistance with cold engine at -2C showed 1 at 1.2 ohms and 2,3,4 at 0.8 ohms, not much of a difference but enough to verify DTC.

I removed the cam cover with difficulty, not having a 1/4" wobble socket for the problematic bolt, but improvised with torx bit in 1/4" spanner followed by ball end allen key.

I tried to remove the female spade connectors from the number 1 plastic housing so I could squeeze them tighter for better grip but it snapped so for the rest I just poked a pick in the end to bend the spade.

Connectors went back with a little wiggling to open up the spades and feel quite secure now and engine hasn't missed a beat since.

Morale of the story being if your problem doesn't show a code and you've taken steps to diagnose it without result, drive it until it does trigger a DTC.

Tips:

1. See above if you don't have a 1/4" wobble socket.

2. Unless cam cover is damaged it's reusable.

3. Don't waste time trying to disassemble injector spade connectors in situ, poke and bend or remove harness for bench work.

So what did u do to fix the problem. I dont have a fault but my no.2 injector is running at about 1.8. As for my starting problem, i'm going to fit a new ignition switch, i got a code come up for that so i will try that.
