Occasional noise from steering when reversing on full lock

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone can provide any info (and hopefully peace of mind!) re something that seems to happen randomly on my 67 plate Mk3 245. If I'm reversing on full lock (like reversing out of my driveway at home), just as the car is slowing to a stop before starting to pull away forwards, the steering makes a funny graunching noise and I can feel it in the steering wheel. It doesn't last long, just a second or so, and it appears to be fine once I've pulled away forwards. It doesn't happen every time...just every now and then and only ever when reversing on full lock.

Anyone got any ideas what might be causing this? And more importantly, is it something serious that's going to need fixing?

Thanks

Could be one of the disc backing plates starting to work loose - they are notoriously flimsy on these cars and the mounting points corrode away. Easy enough to check and eliminate that as a cause. There was a thread recently about this.

Presumably this would be covered under manufacturers warranty? Think I have literally 2 weeks left till it runs out!
