Windscreen Wiper Streaks! HELP!

Featured Replies

I've had this problem for a while now and it's really starting to annoy me.

Everytime I use the windscreen wipers when it's raining or when there is condensation, the wipers leaves huge streaks which impairs my vision. Especially when it's raining at night, it is almost impossible to drive with lights reflecting off the streaks. I'm driving very cautiously as it is beginning to get dangerous now.

I don't know what to do. I've cleaned my wipers. No change. I replaced them wipers and got new ones. Still no change. I've washed the windscreen, still no change.

I honestly don't know what to do right now. I was thinking of applying Rain-X, but I've seen a lot of bad reviews and that it will make the streaks even worse.

Ive attached a picture so you understand what I'm saying. The picture isn't the best as it in the night but you can still see the streaks that have been left after using the wipers.

Please help! Has this happened to anyone and does anyone know what can be done to remove the streaks?

Only use Rain-X when the screen is sorted or you will just lock in the streaks.

Try using something that will cut through the grime such as white spirit or isopropanol.

Or just clean the windscreen and other windows with vinegar and rub over with scrunched up newspaper (not your fish and chip wrapping) if as tight as a Scottish person and then Rain X or similar, Clear Screen etc.

Maby try and bend the metal parts of the wipers a little so that there is more pressure on the screen

Try dry fine steel wool to lightly go over the windscreen. It will take off any film and dried on muck. Then clean the windscreen twice, once with plenty of glass cleaner and the second with a finer mist of cleaner.

^^^ I have seen that been done and gone so wrong.

Never assume people have the common sense they were born with.

Some UK Winter products that help things along.

Then prepping the Fuel Filler Flap, door & hatch seals against freezing closed is Simply Clever

Ok will avoid that.

I just want a clear windscreen 😭

Glass is harder than steel.  As long as you don't have grit in the wool it won't scratch the glass.  (I have tried).  You need the very fine grade and only use it once.  I'm sure you have some residue on the glass, which is why new blades didn't help.  You could twist the arms a bit to change the angle between rubber and glass or you could fit new, OEM wiper arms in case someone fitted non OEM parts.  You could try vinegar or Bar Keeper's Friend which contains oxalic acid.  Many glass cleaners will leave a residue.  Car washes can leave a residue too.  Are the streaks on the driver's side AND the passenger side?  If only one side, try swopping the complete arm and blade.

Sadly car glass is not harder than bird poo or the grit in it.

I replaced glass on a Pole Dancers BMW, all the glass, but then she was extra stupid on how she used the steel wool.

Plastic Skoda Ice Scrapers can be harder than glass, or just the grit caught in the ice is.

Before cleaning off bird crap lay a wet teabag on it, then flush off with H2o if you can.

That's good advice.  I washed my screen thoroughly before I used wire wool for that very reason.  And I used a brand new brush because sponges can trap grit.

AutoBild, the German car magazine, did a very thorough test of screenwashes.  One caused plastic headlamps to crack and craze.  The Sonax products did best

They used the amazing Sonax lab but the testers did not know which wash was being tested.  I recommend the winter and summer versions.  The Sonax 1:10 concentrate scored the highest at 2.2.

There is a greasy residue on that screen, I have no opinion about how it got there but you need to clean it thoroughly when dry with something like brake and clutch cleaner and a microfiber cloth.

And dont forget to thoroughly clean the wiper rubbers but maybe not with a solvent, I always clean them with kitchen roll or workshop paper roll when they are still wet from the washing the car and a huge amount of dirt a grime comes off each time, I have found that is usually the cause of smears and also juddering.

...Follow the "Clean the screen" Advise and be sure to use a good quality windscreen wiper. Bosch have the correct front AND rear fitment for Fabis's and are reasonably cheap fro places such as EPC or CP4L, when using a discount code on the inter web.

Oh, and make sure the interior of the screen is clean, too as it will just highlight the issue. Use the A?C all year round, if possible as it helps to keep the screen clearer then just the warm, blowed air!

By all means use the AC, but even brand new cars can have the blue greasy haze on the inside that you get from the AC, or the chemicals coming out the plastics, and even reacting with the crap that car valeters / pre sales people clean car windscreens with.

Damn hard to clean on some cars where there are screens far forward and reappears regularly.

Only on the drivers side.
