V68 issue solved without VCDS

Featured Replies

Just a bit of info for anyone suffering V68 heater flap problems.

Not long had my Fabia and the heater has been blasting out hot air - the temperature control didn’t seem to do anything. Looking through this forum it seemed the V68 was to blame - confirmed by a code scan - intermittent short to ground. Found a link that showed me how to remove and clean the rheostat on the unit but made no difference

Priced up a new unit with Skoda - the links I’d found gave a price of around £70, but these links were years old. Skoda quoted me - are you sitting down? - £195 including VAT! Apparently stock levels show only 2 new units in the country!

Needless to say picked up one from a breaker for £5. Plugged it in, hanging down from the dash - ignition on, turned the dial - worked fine. I’d also read that you need a licensed copy of VCDS to adapt the unit to its new stop / start positions, but I only have VCDS lite (unlicensed)

Basically with the V68 removed the temperature flap in the heater falls closed - this is the max cold position. Turn the heater knob to its coldest position (with ignition on) and wait for the cog to stop moving. Then refit the V68 lining up the teeth on the cog with those on the flap. This will sync the flap position with that of the knob.  Turn the heater knob to max heat and ensure you have smooth travel throughout, then back to max cold and repeat. If you hear a click when the flap reaches max cold, ease the flap cog round one tooth and repeat

Now works fine - just thought it may help someone else who doesn’t have access to licensed VCDS 👍

Thanks for sharing.

What's it like to remove/refit?

Quite straightforward to be fair. When I did it the first time I followed the guide I found - basically remove the lower half of the dash (glovebox, centre console ie stereo, switches, etc and drivers side lower dash) - but you don’t need to do all that

Second time all I did was remove the glovebox (5 screws, dash end panel off, unplug light and heater tube) and the passenger footwell heating duct (1 screw, wiggle it off)

You can then see the V68 - release the clip nearest you and you can withdraw it and unplug it. Doing it this way takes 10 minutes max 👍
