First Oil Change

Featured Replies

Three months ago bought a 'nearly new' (2019) 1400 miles on clock. Octavia 2.0l Se-l estate TDI

Have enquired about its first service. I have been informed by dealership that the regime is flexible, which is after 2years or 20k.

I currently only cover approximately 6000 miles per year, mostly local driving. I thought I may need a basic oil change within first  2 years??

Does this info sound correct?

It’s your choice given your annual miles,  a service every year that includes an oil and filter is recommended by me and others, ask to switch to fixed rather than variable servicing. Your engine will thank you for it.

Variable is for fleet owners looking to have fixed costs and save money.

Completely agree with the above. I do about 20k miles a year and as well as the annual (20k but still every 12 months) service, I supplement this with an oil and filter change every 10k or 6 months. This to ensure longevity (hopefully).

I just noticed today I'm about to hit 13k miles in the Octavia. It's 2 years old in December and has had 1 DIY oil change so far. I suppose I'll have to look for somewhere to get it serviced. The DIY oil change was relatively simple except I'd never seen a plastic sump plug before :)

Thanks everyone, sounds as if you are all advising yearly.

myOctavia is now 13 months old with around 2300 miles.

In the past with other cars, I tend to go around every 18 months. Should my diesel be treated any differently?

For such low annual mileage, annual changes will be better for the engine and turbo as if you do lots of short journey the oil may not always get fully hot enough to burn off water vapour.

If you do 5k miles or less a year I'd trade it for petrol or electric. My last diesel was fine when I did some miles, it got worse and worse when I only (usually) did short trips. But yes, change the oil. Low mileage can be worse for oil  than high mileage. It doesn't get hot enough to evaporate condensation and gets contaminated.

Beat me to it by seconds ...

If you stick with your diesel as @VRS_White_Hatch suggested moving to petrol as such low milage. At least  get the dealer to change the service regime from flexible to fixed when you get your oil changed. But definitely stick with an annual oil change from that point on irrespective of miles travelled.

Thanks everyone, to be honest I would have preferred a petrol as Paulski pointed out but I was thinking of maybe buying a caravan, so hence the diesel for torque.

Will bear all advice for the future and next time stick with petrol. Hopefully sooner than later.
