Dash rattle

Featured Replies

Recently became fed up with the rattles in the dash, and in the interests of avoiding stinky people at the minute, I’ve just gone ahead and fixed them myself.
So for anyone that’s suffering the same issue hopefully this helps. (My IT skills won’t)
I’ll add the pics to show the tools used, which can all be bought on the bay of evil if required.
I removed the top speaker cover with the trim tools and padded. Remove the trim gently from the front first as the rear needs to be pulled away from the screen and not pulled upwards. Replace in opposite order.
centre console rattle turned out to be the Antenna, which had come loose and was rattling about behind the touch screen.
To fix this you first insert the radio keys into the 4 slots and lift unit away towards the interior. Remove the two leads on the rear and set head unit somewhere safe. Then remove the fast connector from the connectivity unit and lift the two tabs on either side to remove it completely from the dash.
this will give you access to the antenna. I used a very strong double sided 3M tape to fix it in a location avoiding further rattles.
refit the connectivity unit and speed connector (harness). The unit just slides into place and clicks in tight.
On the frame for the screen mount, I’ve padded several touch points just to be sure, and again on the top edge of the screen itself, as this touches the dash trim strip slightly and can vibrate.
Replace the two fittings into the rear of the screen and refit into its location in the dash. Listen to make sure each corner clicks home and locks in. Just be careful applying to much pressure to each corner just incase. I’d hate to see a cracked screen.

Think that makes sense. Hopefully the photos will help.
Think I’ve to upload separately to avoid hitting limit. I hate this interweb nonsense.

That's awful, having to pull your car apart already to fix issues.

Doesn't matter if those panels are embossed with the 'premium' VAG emblem. If they are poorly assembled at the factory the VAG branding is worthless.

Mine is booked in for next week. I’ve had it less that 2 months. It’s a 65 plate. It has several distinct rattles or buzzes on acceleration. If they can’t or won’t fix it i’ll get rid of it. I can’t listen to that.

I had to pull my centre vent out as well and pad it as it recently started to rattle to. Its the one with the hazard switch. Didn’t post as someone else has already shown how to remove and where to pad.

Rattles tend to be ignored by dealers after 6 months from new. There is wording in the warranty.

My car is rattling more after 2 years but its only covered 18k I just don't think they are assembled well. I won't pull my car apart to chase them but imagine if the car was purely electric without engine noise to mask the rattling!

Executive car my arse. Its merely a large car.

Its a real shame ‘cos I love the look of the car, its size is spot on for me, the power is nice. I am thinking of some helper springs to lift the back end when towing a caravan but I won’t bother if the dealer are not interested in helping me sort out rattles and  the buzzing dashboard! I commute 185 miles and back to work each week so spend 6/7 hours in it..... too long to be infuriated by these issues.

I had a really annoying rattling noise I could hear inside the car at certain times.  Had it in at the dealers last week and advised them that I could hear creaking noises from the suspension when going over speed humps etc.  They noticed that the undertray was loose so secured that back up.  This wasn't the cause of the creaky suspension noises (still to be investigated again), however the rattly noise I could hear inside the car has now completely gone.  I'm very happy now.....until I go over a speed bump that is :-D

I had a few rattles when new but they seemed to fix themselves with age !

Good chance it’s the anti roll bar bushes.

Reading through the forum indicates the car is prone to rattling. Rattling not as badly as a 1980s montego but considering its status as nearing the top of the brand range its poor.

You can tell it will creak and rattle by the quality and fit of some of the interior. The, car is full of lightweight materials so I guess them flexing and creaking was inevitable.

You're not the first one to mention that to me :-D

Exactly the same issue with my 2019 Superb executive.

Rattle and vibration from behind the screen on coarse road surfaces usually at motorway speeds.

Removed the screen and the GPS antenna was hanging down exactly the same as in your picture

Attached it  as described with 3m double sided tape and the rattle has gone.

The original adhesive must deteriorate after a couple of years with the heat on the dashboard.

Thanks for the info,  the rattle was really annoying previously.

A timely topic. I've got a rattle on my 2017 L&K which I thought had gone when the main dealer said there were some loose heat shields, but it's still there at just under 2k rpm which is when the car changes gear when taking it easy. I think it's in the driver's door but not too sure. Also, any recommendations for toolkits for removing panels would be appreciated.

I had a 2017 L&K which had a really annoying buzzy rattle in the drivers door whenever i was listening to anything that was slightly bassy. Even more annoying it used to do it whenever Johnathan Agnew was peaking during Test Match Special which made him even more irritating than he normally is!

Dealer could never identify it :wall:

My bloody Octy III has the same bloody buzz, going to have a go myself i think!

Rattles in doors on both sides of mine were from grill trim just above the door panel. I padded them very lightly. Just enough to stop them rubbing off the door panel. One of my other buzzing noises was coming from the clocks, where it meets the dashboard. Again, padded and refitted.
To be honest, this car just seems to like making new noises, like it thinks I’m bored possibly.
