how to install a usb port?

Featured Replies

hi guys,

hope everyone is ok.

i have got a few blank plates(if that is what you call them) in where the handbrake is and where you press to lock the doors.

right now i am using a usb to cig lighter but i dont like it like that and wondered where i can get the usb port from and how would i wire it up please?

many thanks

I would suggest to not instal USB ports on a horizontal surface, they wil collect dirt and debries over time. Other than that i would get a flush mounth USB outlet and hardwire it to the fusebox you have on the driver side panel.

Just remember that you cant hirdwire a normal USB port directly to the fusebox as USB is 5v and car is 12v.

EDIT: to prevent the USB from draining battery when car is of you can use a relay to only have the USB powered when ACC has power(the car stereo trigger cable).

many thanks for that

so you recommend wiring it up to my stereo?

Just seen this topic; I am keen to add a double USB socket to support a DashCam and a Garmin and a SatNav.

I have found the following two items on the UK Amazon site:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B07C96SP75/ref=acr_dp_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&reviewerType=all_reviews#reviews-filter-bar

and

Can someone tell me where to wire it up so that it is only powered up when the ignition is switched on (to save the battery).

I have mounted a 12v socket on mine to power my Nextbase DAB/bluetooth adaptor, with requires a plug in power source, but the requirement for power is the same as a USB. I used a piggyback fuse adaptor as typically below and used it on in an ignition powered fuse in the fusebox. This gives the option of using the original fuse rating for the sockets use, and also using an appropriate fuse for the tapping.
