Superb Sportline - standard spec vs options

Featured Replies

@Bap33 I tried the rear screen wash trick today for the rear view camera and was pleasantly surprised to find it works very well so cheers for the tip. I really should RTFM sometime....

So if your positioning yourself for a sportline what engine are you going to choose? You say you like the sporty look of said sportline so will you choose a 220 or 280 tsi to match sporty looks with some performance?

I think on engine choice, I'm falling down on the side of the 220 rather than the 280. This is still going to a family wagon, ferrying the wife and kids around town and being used for family getaways.  The 2.0 220 seems to provide a decent blend of performance and fuel economy, whereas the 280 although fun would be a bit of budget buster when it comes to long-term ownership. I would have considered the 1.5 150PS, but from this thread been illuminated by the wet clutch/dry clutch differences and so another reason to go with the 2.0 220. The far tricker question i'm still to settle on is Sportline vs. L&K. Pretty much changing my mind on this on a daily basis!

The heated rear seats in the L&K swung it for me

Having driven both I really didn’t think the 280 was worth the extra. If I found 2 identical cars and they were equal in spec and price I’d have the 280 but there are so few of them anyway and what I found is most people and or dealers for demo purposes added no options at all on the 280 SportLine to keep the price at list, £39,995 to avoid the tax hike whereas the 280 L&K was already over £40k list so no worries there. I found the petrol SportLine’s all either barren for spec or loaded with expensive options like the glass roof but not the heated windscreen which was £300. Power wise they were very similar up to about 70 mph and from there the 280 pulled away but you can get 300 on a stage 1 with the IS20 and 350 on a stage 2 so the 220 can be made to keep up with the 280 and the IS38 is bolt on so it’s only the 4x4 you lose and I really didn’t find any benefit to having it, the FWD car can still handle the power fine, use all of it and it’ll spin the wheels and under steer but so will the 4x4 cars. I’d like a 4x4 for the extra kerbweight for towing but otherwise I wouldn’t get hung up on it.

The OP is in the same position as me, I couldn’t live with the base SportLine spec as it’s missing some key options but I couldn’t bring myself to buy an L&K quite yet so for me, short of a very well optioned SportLine coming up I’ll be in a different brand of car next.

Very well summed up. I think this is why I just went for the 280 L&K so I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything in spec or power (without modifying the engine) oh, I also have a thing for exhaust tailpipes, which you really do only get on the 280!.

It doesn't sound as though the OP will be modifying the car anyway, but one day I will get round to blacking out my grille and chrome bumper strip but for now they break things up a bit on my L&K.

Looks like there are 12 L&K Estates, 5 Sportline's and 15 SL Plus on AutoTrader currently:

Pre- facelift hatches should come in under £40k list price, my 2019 272 L&K with a couple of options like spare wheel and rear wiper just about squeezed under the £40k so only £150 a year road tax now.

The thing I couldn't find on an L&K when I was looking was the virtual cockpit, I guess the cost of optioning this would have pushed a 272 L&K over the £40k.

Reading the replies, I feel I really lucked in, my 6 month old low mileage 19 reg was massively discounted from its sub 40K new price, with sunroof, digital cockpit, heated steering wheel, rear wiper, spare wheel, as well as the standard extras. If I could find an equivalent newish second-hand dragon green Sportline I would buy it. They do come up for sale rarely but almost always without a heated screen or one of my other must have options and I'm not sure if the Alcantara seats are ventilated, I have got used to having them.

I did the same as you, bought mine at 5 months old with 1800 miles and paid £26k which was a fair chunk of a saving on the list price.

There are a lot of creature comforts that I'd miss from an L&K in a standard Sportline; no leather, no ventilated seats, no heated rear seats, no heated screen, no heated wheel, no DCC, no blind spot detection, no rear view camera, no smart light assist.......there's so much missing kit it would feel like driving a BMW 😆
