vRS estate

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I know that there was thread relating to this previously, but couldn't find it

I was wondering why they are talking about fitting 16" wheels on the estate as opposed to the full 17" fitted (mostly) to the saloon.

I know this was related to the strut bracing behind the split/fold rear seats - why is this? is there physically more material underneath in the estate that replaces the strut bracing (of the saloon) in order to reduce chassis twist?

It was suggested that because of the greater twist of the estate the 17" wheels couldn't be used - this isn't due to fouling underneath surely?

Excuse my ignorance! any feedback you may have is welcome - my old man is looking at buying the estate following a drive of my vRS saloon. He wants to transport furniture/dogs etc at 140+mph

cheers

Russ

or.... take the opportunity to go for a 4x4 estate, and carry furniture \ dogs at 140mph on wet \ country roads :)

Hi Ian

This is true! soemthing that I have wondered is that of the rolling radius.... I am guessing the 4x4 has 16" boots - is the rolling radius the same as with the 17" wheels or does it run with a lower gearing (by virtue of the wheels)

- I'm making the assumption that the 4x4 ratios are the same as the vRS (probably not true, but just to illustrate the point)

Food for thought though!

Russ

I expect the rolling radius is very similar, the higher profile on the 16's vs the lower on the 17's...

..however the gearboxes are different. the 4x4's is shorter, more "sprint" gearing as it can put that power down, the RS's is longer so gains at the top end.

Not had mine maxed out, but seen 145 (on track) and still pulling, maybe 155 top, whereas a (modified) RS has seen a GPS verified 169.
