First Oil change, does it have to be done at a dealer?

Morning Guys,

 

2019 Karoq sportline 2.0 TDI 4x4.....   At approx 8500 miles it's just started flashing up that it needs an oil change in 800 miles.  I've bought my own oil at approx £30 on a Halfords Trade Card Castrol Edge 5w/30  VW507 LL oil etc.  So my question is, does my car need to go to the dealer for this oil change due to anything needed to be reset? Warranty honoured etc?  Or can I take a it my 'trusted' local garage for them to do?

 

Just an FYI....My Local Skoda Dealer is about 1hr drive away.  Hence, my local trusted garage would be much much more convenient....

I suspect, in your heart, you know the answer - do I take my new £30k motor to the dealer for a first service or do I save an hour and let my man do it and potentially argue the toss later down the line.......?

Do I want my guarantee to be possibly voided if something major goes wrong.....?

At best you will have an argument before getting anything sorted and in all my 8 skodaas in the family so far there have been at least minor warranty issues.

 

Current car had the battery replaced at 2 weeks old!!

2010 Yeti was a very early version of that model and had a number of significant warranty repairs done which must have cost into thousands.

Cheers guys, but I think that your missing the point of the question or you're riddled with fear of local garages being absolutely incompetent.   

 

The key words in my message being 'trusted', 'warranty'. and 'anything needing to be reset?'.     

I know my local garage well and trust them with other cars of greater sensitivity and value than my Karoq.   If the first oil change is just a matter of dropping the oil and fitting a new filter then, they are more than capable of the task.   But if the dashboard will look like a second Xmas tree because there is some dealer magic required to reset things....then point taken, or I can tear up my warranty slip on the way back home....then fair enough it needs to go to Skoda.

 

Sorry guys, I don't wish to sound grumpy on this......but I don't like losing 3 hrs of time (1hr there, 1 hr wait, 1 hr drive back) or enjoy paying dealer service charges, unless I absolutely have to.

 

So back to the question.....does it need any special input from a dealer?   Will in invalidate my warranty if not done by Skoda?

The first two replies sum up the problem with Briskoda - far too many armchair experts who prefer to answer their own questions rather than that of the OP.

 

The real answer is that your warranty will not be affected by having your car serviced by a 3rd party. As long as the garage is genuine ( VAT registered ), that they use genuine parts and the car is serviced to the same schedule as recommended by Skoda, there is no problem with the warranty issues. Just remember to keep all receipts as proof of what work was carried out and the parts used. Are you absolutely 100% sure that's the correct oil for your particular engine? If so then no problemo.

 

If there is an issue going outside the dealer network, it will be that you loose goodwill. So if something goes wrong that's not covered by warranty or say in a few years when it's just outside warranty, you'll have next to no chance of a contribution from the dealer or Skoda. As long as you understand that then a trusted garage is as good a place as anywhere to have your car serviced.

 

Tip - You say there's no Skoda dealer within an hour of you - what about other VW Group garages? Many years ago I had my VW's serviced by the local Skoda dealership - warranty still intact and goodwill still maintained as I had the car serviced within the VW empire. Main dealers are usually keen to get your business so may price match local businesses.

Is it a car you own & were you asked by the Dealership if you wanted the car on Fixed Service Intervals?

 

Your car is only coming up for an Oil / Filter change because it was changed to Fixed Servicing (372 days / 9,400 miles) at the PDI from the Variable Servicing that it arrived from the factory with. 24 months / 18,000-20,000 miles.

 

It would be a good idea to have the Oil change at an Independent Garage with the Licensed Equipment so they get TPI's, Updates etc and that can put the Oil / Inspection Service on the System.

 

A VAT Registered establishment that can use the correct fluids and parts does not void a warranty, but good if they can reset the Service Indicator and also put the Service on the system.

 

PS

Your car currently has VW508 00 / 509 00 oil in from the factory.

So that is 0w 20 FS IV. 

 

You can use VW 507 00  / 5w 30 FS III if you want when servicing it.

My local dealer is the Scarborough Des Winks Skoda, and across the same car park is Des Winks also own the VW franchise.   I like your idea, but sadly exactly the same distance to travel.

Very interesting....So if I can get my local garage to do the oil change and reset the service indicator on the car, we should be good to go.   Any thoughts on why the original dealer sets the service indicator at 9k ish on one car and then 18k ish on the next?  Is it just to bring in some extra service work?   I'm happy for the oil to be changed this time round, no probs at all for good house keeping and future engine life.  If possible I'd ideally like to switch onto a long life service program moving forward, do you know if that can occur if requested?   Cheers

They reset it hoping to get your business in 12 months time and had no right to do so if the car is not Leased and required to be on Fixed Servicing and the owners asked for that, 

or maybe a Service Plan is running and requires 'Fixed Servicing'.

 

As it is if you are doing low annual miles getting a Service / Inspection is not a bad idea if you are not checking under the car.

 

@ this Oil & Filter time is when to get it changed to Variable if you want.

The Haldex Service is due @ 3 years or sooner, and the brake fluid change if getting done at 3 years.

 

The Pollen Filter change might be due at 2 years or sooner, but you could check and maybe change it yourself.

 

Main Dealership Service item prices can be expensive now.

The fixed price is based on 3-10 year old cars so best see what the Main Dealers are asking for on a 1 year 'Interim Service', 

something that the name has changed from this year, and before it was called a Minor Service or just an Oil Service.

No, I disagree, your first line sums up the problem with Briskoda.......

 

The OP specifically asked if the warranty would be affected, I believe I answered his question, albeit from my 'armchair'.........

 

I agree it won't necessarily void any warranty but it'll make life difficult - in these progressive days of 'no service book', how's the OP going to get his first service details loaded into the VAG group service record computer - short answer is 'he won't' and thus any service record check/enquiry being made later down the line will show his vehicle as having an incomplete history. 

By Manufacturers Guidelines the car does not require an Oil Change at 372 days / 9,400 miles or sooner.

The car left the Factory on Variable Servicing with Long Life oil.  

 

So this 'Interim' Oil & Filter change is because a Dealership was at it once again.

The Service indicator left on Fixed Servicing until the next Service which would have been the First if the Dealership were not at it does not invalidate the Warranty.

But the 'Service Countdown' needs reset.

Just had my oil change 20,000 mile service done. They used “ Non franchise Longlife 0W-30” 4.3 ltrs at 11.30 per litre ex VAT. (£59.34 inc)

Told me that due to Covid if I wanted they could offer a pick up and delivery service (14 miles to dealer), that cost £15 which seemed reasonable.......then they added £12.50 CDW, so £27.50 in total, to which they added VAT so collection/delivery wasnt £15 as quoted but £30.

Also they told me the keyfob battery needed replacing.......that came to £9.40 for two CR2032 batteries.

They certainly know how to charge!
