Super unleaded which is best?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just wondered which super unleaded is best for my VRS?

Shell?

BP?

Esso?

Would love to hear everyone's opinion.

Tesco Momentum 99 which is 99 ron minimum the same as Shell V-Power Nitro+,  and not because it is cheaper, but because the Base Fuels are imported by Greenergy & Shell as partners and the detergent package is not important, you want the Octane.

Esso, BP, Gulf, Texaco, Costco, Sainsbury's Super Unleaded is 97 ron minimum in the UK.

I use the cheapest, Tesco momentum 99, it's all much of a muchness, even a chemistry lab would struggle to tell them apart, it's down to the additive pack really, the rest is all marketing.

That's a shame because there isn't a Tesco near me that sells it. So will have to go for the more expensive Shell.

@GUESTY Do you not actually travel outwith the area where you live?

If there is a Sainsbury the 97 ron min is OK and the same price as the Momentum 99.

The 98 Super is on your Fuel Filler flap, and some Super Unleaded will be above the Minimum, i usually find that is the case with the Momentum.

I thought that Esso had changed their higher octane offering to 99 or a minimum of 99, I've still got to check/try that out, but I'm sure that I read that somewhere.

Yeah I thought esso was 99.

No mate I don't travel anywhere out my area really and there isn't a Sainsbury's near me either. I thought esso was 99. Put some in the other day and I'm sure it said 99?

Sorry, my bad,

ESSO Synergy Supreme + 99 Super Unleaded is 99 ron & supplied in most of the UK by Greenergy that produces and distributes Momentum and who are part owned by Tesco.

I have not heard of it now being 99 ron and change from 97.

They say it has no Ethanol but needs to have in some regions, those might well be where Greenergy Deliver it.

So would you choose Shell or esso? Is the same price near me.

Either, it doesn't matter, as mentioned you want high octane and they're both the same.

So they would both use the same additives?

I think that it will be down to personal brand preference really, I have mainly in my motoring life been an Esso user, when a Shell filling station on my route to/from work, and they stocked lots of useful DIYer parts, so I moved across to Shell, as that was in the Central Belt of Scotland and soon after that Shell were starting to get hammered in the motoring press for using suspect/unexpected flame front enhancers, I got a bit concerned, soon after Scot Police maybe in the Fife region, who seemed to be using Esso exclusively, started to have serious engine issues with their VX fleet, I quickly jumped ship back to Esso and suffered the inconvenience, at that time, of saving tokens for maybe soup bowls, luckily that offer ran out quickly!  So while I would always chose to opt for Esso, I am also a Costco UL+ user, my decision to fill my S4 up with maybe a couple of tanks of this new Esso 99 hopefully would tie in with using that car for a few long journeys - but no chance of being able to do that for quite a few months!

The Billon dollar question - that seems to be a trade secret so you will not get a true answer to that one!

Edit:- always remember that what you load into your car is made out of 2 "parts", the basic spirit is common for all brands who get supplied by a single refinery, that is essential to keep the supply chain sensible, where the brands add their "identity" is at the tanker filling stands at the refineries, as that is where the additive package is added to the spirit, each has their own "brew".

Hi I'm using Esso as its closest to me.

Root, what oil do you use in your fabia VRS?

@GUESTY  None as the engine is not in the car.

But when it goes back in it will be 5w 40 FS so to VW502 00,  From Asda / Comma or where ever as that is all they need IMO.

(No use of long life oil or servicing and short lived Twinchargers.)

4 Litres will be put in from empty, then checked at operating temp so near 90*oC actual not as showing on the Temp Gauge..

So I need 5w 40? Synthetic or not?

  • Author

Quantum 5w-30 longlife 3 any good for my car? Used it in my old car.

That is the recommended oil, the oil most dealerships used for fixed or variable servicing.  Many have no issues with long life oil.  Plenty have had dead Twinchargers.

Like getting on for a 3rd of the CAVE's & a good number of CTHE's.

Hence for me with Super Unleaded with its detergents the last thing i would use with a Twincharger is Long Life oil.

Bore wash being a common issue.

Each to their own though and what they like to use

So what brand 5w-40 would you use Root?

ASDA / COMMA / TESCO, anyone's to VW502 00 even from Quantum / Fuchs.   So that is not long life 5w 40 Full Synthetic.

The engines are just fine on that, change every 9,400 miles / 372 days or sooner.

Not to save money, to save the engine.  That saves money.
