Headlight change/adjustment for use in Spain

Featured Replies

I have a 2017 Fabia SE L TSI which I now have to register in Spain after obtaining Residencia. To do so the car has to pass ITV inspection (MOT). Can anyone advise whether the headlights are adjustable internally for right hand dip or whether I will have to have them replaced? Thanks in advance for any advice.

You will not be able to swop the pattern of these lights from RHD to LHD, all you do is to flatten the beam which is what most people do or should do before driving "on the other side of the road" - I would think that doing that is only okay for remaining UK reg'd, the minute that you re-reg in a LHD country, you will have to get these headlights replaced and the rear lights replaced as well, or fit a new separate rear fog light both to comply with local laws.

I passed a German TÜV with my previous car. It was a RHD and had levers inside the lights to flatten the beam.

If the Fabia also has this then it may suffice since a flat beam is usually allowed.

I had no problem in Belgium with 'flattened' beams, but I wasn't resident just military (NATO). You'll have to find out locally if you need to buy new lights to conform or if they're OK with flattened beams. Lights are ridiculously expensive, but maybe you can get a pair from Spanish eBay and sell yours on UK eBay!!!

As rum4mo says, you may have to do some jiggery with the rear lights. My car had red fog lights both sides, but at that time Belgium only had one on the offside, but they were happy with me just blocking the nearside red light with black Duct Tape!

Often this sort of decision is down to whether the tester is a jobsworth or a human.

I suppose the next thing will be if you get approval with just flattening the beams, do you really want to drive a lot in darkness with just a flattened beam, or would you prefer to be have the usual kerbside extended cone of light, which is meant to be there and provide a bit more safety for walkers etc.
