Winter is coming!

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Greetings from Sweden.

I do not know if you use winter tires?

But here it is a must,I bought ordinary steel rims (wheels) powder coated them and made some hubcaps.

Put on the best studded tires,,,,,,,now I am waiting for the snow:smile:IMG_9313.thumb.jpeg.2b3f457d7800cc3592a0ec1237b34424.jpegIMG_9317.thumb.jpeg.801dac844a220516b622baf77806692e.jpegIMG_9285.thumb.jpeg.63d5a4b0c925caf4fc40e6eec0d3be6f.jpeg

Welcome.

Nice and so is the car at the rear.

A we taste of winter is arriving in the North of the UK this week, but nothing that needs the fitting of studded tyres.   Have fun.

That looks to be a nice 'project' car at the rear.

I wish for mild winters,,,,,,this is from the back of my house in 2009!

I think it'd be an extremely good idea to start a new thread in the projects section as those two cars would certainly attract a lot of attention.

Hey @hansen1 those rims are great! I bought some old MK2 alloy rims for the winter, but yours look much better :) I've just started to think about replacing them with the steel ones as your :D

I moved from the factory 225/50/17 to 215/60/16 for the winter.

I'm surprised that you don't drive AWD model in Sweden .

Hey fr1nklyn.

I liked the old style the steel rims have. And like you I moved from factory 205/55/16 to 195/65/15.

Never had any problem with 2WD,,,,,,yet!

You just need to get a non branded set of round black bolt covers to avoid these silver/grey summer ones getting wiped/ripped off by the snow/slush/ice?    Like on VW Polo etc that have a hole in the centre to place a hook on to remove when they are recessed? Or a set of chemi blackened bolts and security bolt?

Certainly getting them powder coated should avoid what quickly happened to the first steel wheels I bought for my wife's 2002 Polo, the paint disappeared very quickly and they rusted badly, but I covered that up by buying a cheap set of Golf trims for them - easier to clean in winter!

rum4mo, funny that you thought of the bolt covers, noted for one hour ago that I have lost one of them!

I will definitely buy some black ones.

I measured the paint thickness on the rims then I bought them, only 35-50 thousands of millimeters.

In my world that is a joke (I am a powder painter)

So I applied a thick coat of glossy black+clear coat, now the paint thickness is between 175-250 thousands of millimeter.

It's always better with higher and narrower tires in the snow :P Studded tires aren't allowed here, but the winter ones are mandatory from Nov 15th till Mar.

@rum4mo good point about the bolt covers, especially if they threat the roads with salt in your region.

Back in the day i could buy 155/70/15 snowtires, they worked really fine.

That would be overkill :D

Another set of studded tires huh? :)  I guess they are needed more than AWD in Scandinavian countries?

It was -11 and -7 in the last few nights here and we got some snow, but warmer weather is coming in the next couple of weeks.

the octy is a 1.0TSI. no AWD needed on the motorway :)

but if you want fun then AWD helps enormously! Our SX4 S-Cross needs testing properly this winter.... that runs Hakka 8s, as does the A2.

Good studded winter tires are more important than 4WD

I guess this is especially true when you have “On Demand” AWD like the Haldex system :)

Ha, seeing Dalsland brings back memories of Ed :)

Should ping @Jaco2k and then go look at the video I should have finished already last month...

SYKES?

I now live in the hills above Matlock in Derbyshire and we had a brief period of heavy snow which began to settle.

I have a full set of Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen 2 which I had from new in February. Ideal tyres for UK which mostly gets mild winters. They performed superbly on the snowy roads yesterday.
