Space Saver Spare Wheels?

Featured Replies

What is the point of the space saver spare wheel? Before anyone points it out, I know it obviously takes up less space  but you can only drive at 56MPH with the damn thing, what use is that if you're miles from home? What are you supposed to you do, drive on the motorway at dangerously slow OAP speed or use A roads all the way home?

The other question is what do you do with the full size wheel that you just took off.

I've never understood the logic of those either, on any level.

The idea is that you use them to limp to the nearest tyre place and get your proper road tyre repaired :D In previous cars, the space save wheel has always been in a wheel well that is big enough to hold a full-sized spare so never had to worry about where to put it :D

I've got a space saver on my TT, a full size wheel just wouldn't fit in the bottom of the boot without further restricting the already small boot space. Personally I hate the damn things but what can you do ? My mate's MR2 doesn't even have a spare, just a can of tyre filler ! That's definitely down to a lack of space though.

I guess there's also an element of manufacturers saving money in some cases ?

Although it's weird that my wife's new A4 has a steel spare, whereas my old Octavia had a full size alloy ! So much for "prestige" brands.

My CTR has a space saver too, trouble is it won't fit over the front brakes so you have to put a rear wheel on the front then the spacesaver on the back is you get a front puncture!  Luckily i've only had one puncture and that was on the back, touch wood.
