Climatronic odd behaviour on heating - inner centre vents don't blow hot air on Auto

Featured Replies

I have noticed an odd thing with the Climatronic on my car and was wondering if it is faulty or if it is a "Characrterisitic" of all the Karoq's with Climatronic.

I have my climatronic on 22C and on Auto and all the vents are fully open (2x by the stereo and one on each outer side of the dash). I also have AirCare set to on and and everything else set to Auto.

I have the temperature set to 22C and on a cold morning the car starts to warm up.  I notice some nice warm air coming out of the two middle side vents but nothing out of the to vents next to the stereo.  This means that I end up with one hand getting nicely warmed and the other hand left freezing cold. I have tried setting the vent controls to "centre" and then the warm air comes out of all 4 centre vents but in Auto, no matter how long I wait, or how warm the interior has got, the two vents by the stereo will never pass hot air. If I have cooling on in the summer etc then these vents do work normally and  all 4 centre vents push out cold air.   If I look at the graphic it is showing a hot arrow next to these vents thus indicating that it "should" come out of these vents and when I switch to screen or footwell these arrows dissapear.  I suspect these are only "dumb graphics" and not actually telling you the actual state of the air coming out of the vents but, all the same, the graphic does indicate hot air should be available at the two centre "stereo" vents.

Is this a feature/characterisitic or is my Climatronic faulty?  Can someone else with Climatronic have a go on the next cold day??  If it is only mine then I will take it in but if everyone's Climatronic behaves in the same "very odd IMHO" way then I won't bother as I know it will not end well with the service department :-)

Thanks

Paul

My left hand gets cold in these circumstances as well.

I have similar behavior on Karoq on Auto setting.

It was similar in Octavia 3.

:-)

At least its not just me then.  It is an odd behavior though.  I wonder what their thinking is.

I’ve never used the Auto function and have never noticed cold air from the centre vents after the car engine’s got some heat in it.  Something else to have a look at next time out.

No the cold air was to demonstrate that in the summer the AC is working on all 4 vents.  In my situation above there is no air at all coming from the centre 2 vents (hot or cold or otherwise) when the cabin is asking for heat.  When its asking for cooling the centre two vents seem to work.  I thought most folk used "Auto" on the climatronic. Isn't that why people pay several grand for a feature pack that has it (e.g. SEL). A big chunk of that package is the Climatronic and the whole point of it is to adjust the airflow and temperature automatically :-)

  • 2 months later...

I have just purchased an Octavia 3 a week ago, and have noticed something similar; regardless of the temperature I set (not Auto), the middle 2 vents continuously blow out cold air.

I have reset the system, which seemed to resolve this for the duration after the reset until the next day, when it went back to blowing out cold again.

I'm assuming this is a fault, or am I missing something in the settings?

It could be a fault.  If you happen to need to visit the garage for anything else you could ask them to look into that too.  I am going to ask them at my next service but that's not 'till July :-)

cheers

Its a feature that Iliked and missed now that I no longer have Climatronic, the ability to keep the car warm during cold weather but have cool air to the face if needed on a long drive where tiredness could be an issue, I only ever opened those vents when I wanted to breathe cool air.

During the warm up period limiting the flow of warm air helps demist the windscreen and side windows quicker, the side vents are really for the side windows.

Hi J.R.

I see your point and agree about certain situations where it is useful to keep you more alert but... IMHO when its -10C in the morning and you have one hand near the hot side vent area (while holding the wheel) and one hand near the cold vent area (also holding the wheel) either being blasted by cold air (if open) or having no direct air flow on it at all (and so not getting warmed up as quickly as the other hand) it doesn't feel quite right. Its like that experiment where you put one hand in freezing water and the other hand in really hot water at the same time and the brain does weird things :-)   e.g. Hand in Ice Water Experiment - Science Class | Study.com

I have closed the centre vents in the winter and directed the side vents to the windows so the issue is minimised then at some point in the late spring I will open the centre vents and put the side vents to my body to get the cool AC     :-)

I too had climatronic on an older VAG car (my 2009 VW Tiguan) and it didn't behave like that? I had all vents open all of the time and the vents all put out hot or cold air depending on the cabin temperature. Maybe something changed in the design between 2009 and 2019.   I just wish it was a bit more "set it and forget it" like my old Tiguan was.

Cheers,

Paul
