Fast tick-over (2.0 TDI 150hp)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I took my car in for its 2nd service recently, having covered 18K miles.  It's a 2.0 TDI 150hp, 2018 SEL-Exec. Model.

I have noticed the tick-over speed remains unusually high for what seems like an extended time, following initial start-up. Even after covering many miles, with the temperature gauge confirming that the engine is warming-up correctly.

Tick-over has typically been around 750rpm, ('ish), but seemingly following the service it's now around 1,100rpm and very noticeable.

I am putting this down to either the colder mornings we are now experiencing or something has been altered during the service.  I have to say though, this is my second winter with the car and I have never noticed it before.

Does anyone have any ideas please ?

Also, this thing scares me to death in any slippery conditions - it seems to have no traction whatsoever and even trying to climb the modest gradient off my drive, during a recent hard frost, had the thing spinning the wheels ! (The tread depth on the standard P7's were confirmed at 4mm (F) and 5mm (R) during the service - Again, any ideas please ?

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Not sure if it’s linked is the air con on? Try turning it and the fan controls to off.

DPF regeneration in progress.

I noticed mine (exactly the same model, but 2016 vintage) doing this recently.

It hasn't had any service or other work done in the last 4 months, so nothing has been altered recently.

I am doing only really short journeys these days and the car has done some DPF regenerations in bits and pieces over the last week or so.

Since the regen has completed it seems to have settled back to normal tickover behaviour, so I guess that's what's causing yours to run fast.

During that period my fuel consumption also dropped from 45-50 to 35 MPG at last fill up!

Roll on spring & end of lockdown.

Hi,

Thanks very much for all of your replies.

The Blower has been on, but not the A/C.  Next time I go out, I will leave the Blower off, and see if that makes a difference.

The car did recently do a regen, (within the last 200 miles or so), so I didn't even consider this - especially as the issue is happening, for a while after initial start-up, when the engine is still warming up.  However 'll check the status of the Filter with a reader gadget I have, next time I go out and the engine is racing.  (Likely to be around April, the way things are going.....).

Cheers again.

I take it that at 2 years / 18,000 miles the Airbox was not opened and the air filter looked at and certainly not changed.

An airfilter should be on the invoice if it was replaced.

I would look in the airbox just to check how it is looking.

Was it a Skoda / VW garage doing the service that might have done a software update, or was it an independent?

Ask if a Software Update was carried out.

Regarding the tyres, they are summer tyres, and 2 year old summer tyres.

Have you checked if they changed the tyre pressures at the service, maybe inflated them more.

This would have been a good time maybe to change the front wheels / tyres to the rear, to get the most life out of them if that tread measurement is accurate.

Hi again,

The invoice doesn't mention an air filter... Apart from the usual Oil / Oil Sump Plug & Washer and Oil Filter, the only other "item" was the pollen filter - this was carried out at official Skoda, Derby. (Whilst I was in "deep south").

No mention of a software update - But I'll ask....

I'll certainly open the Air Filter Box and take a look - thanks for the advice.

There is an entry on the log, that the tyre pressures were adjusted.

There was also an advisory of uneven tyre wear on the I/S front's which suggest tracking is out of line.  (Not sure why they didn't advise during the service and I could have instructed them to correct and swap over the wheels, front to back).

I intend to go to a local tyre fitter for this work to be attended to.

Thanks again.

Sounds like a regen to me too. A good blast up the motorway is all you need.

The chap lives in the Orcadian archipelago - not many motorways on them there islands!

The nearest one, from memory, is the M90 at Perth - a mere 265 miles, and a ferry crossing, away.....:giggle:

Fit M+S, Three Mountain Peak and Snowflake rated winter tyres (I'd recommend Dunlop D5 Winter Sport on a spare set of alloys) or at the very least All Season tyres with the same rating (I'd recommend Michelin CrossClimate+ which you can use all year round).  The rubber compound on summer tyres plasticises below an ambient temperature of 7 deg C and as you've discovered, significantly reduces the level of adhesion.

That's brilliant advice r.e. the tyres - thank you Schtum. - I'll start checking out prices on those "all season" tyres.

Cardo, you beat me to it !.... Sadly, (or not), there are no motorways anywhere near, although a good blast from Kirkwall to Burwick, (and back), on the A961 usually does the trick !

Thanks again to all and all the very best for the New Year, stay safe.

Cheers

It may be just down to the current cold spell and all the associated use of fans, heated windscreens and mirrors etc that's just keeping the battery etc charged. I've noticed that my stop/start isn't cutting in much at the moment. If it's a regen, you'll notice the gear indicator telling you to change down etc.

I performed a test on mine only a local 2 mile journey today. From start it was running at 1k rpm, all the way to the destination. On the way back I turned off the climate and fans. By the time I got home the revs had settled down. After pulling on to the drive I turned the climate inc AC back on and the revs rose back up to 1k again. Turning off within 30 seconds made no diffence. I turned the engine off after a minute of high idle. So for me on a S2 170 TDI DSG 2011, non stop start. This is the behaviour
