Scala SEL. Thoughts after 6 months

Featured Replies

Probably no revelations or nothing anyone hasn't heard before but here goes.....

I’ve had the Scala SEL around 6 months now and thought I’d report back on what I think.

Over all, I like the car a lot but there are a few things that annoy me. I’m just going to list these, and a few of them are personal preference. Assume that everything else about the car is great.

Drivers seat. Can get a bit uncomfortable on a long journey. I wish it was a bit more padded.

Drivers seat. The back always seems to move by a few degrees from journey to journey so I always have to pull it up a little bit.

Lane detection. Hate it and personally don’t think it’s that safe. The first thing I do is turn it off. I wish I had the option to disable it on start up in settings. I understand it’s needed to get some sort of certification for Skoda. I’d argue that it’s not my problem!

Having to go on the main screen to change heater settings. Ridiculously badly thought through.

No wireless Android Auto.

Not being able to upload radio logos via stick to the 9.2” Amundsen. A minor thing but drives me mad.

The user guide says you can do this but you can’t via USB.

I contacted Skoda Support who told me that I could upload it via SD card. I pointed out that the car doesn’t have an SD slot.

They then told me that there was no need as the images reside on an internal drive. I pointed out that a load of logos are missing or some that get assigned are plain wrong – completely different station.

They then told me that the incorrect logos would be sorted in a software update which I thought was just fobbing me off. I’ve had 2 software updates since I spoke to them and it hasn’t been fixed.

I spoke to them again. Still absolutely no resolution and no explanation for not being able to upload (that probably annoys me most) but this time they added that they don’t have licensing for some logos. I reminded them that these logos aren’t missing on one of the company Octavia’s. They moved on swiftly and asked me if there was anything else they could help me with? Yes. Are you going to update the user guide to show that you can’t do this? Still waiting for a response on that. To sum up, no help at all.

Spoke to the local Skoda garage. They understood to their credit and said it drives them mad too but there’s no solution and they can’t understand for the life of them why it’s been taken out.

One wish. Being able to get Google Maps/Waze on the dashboard display as although adequate, I think Google maps are better than the Skoda satnav.

But, other than that – and these are minor in the grand scheme of things, I love the car.

I just leave heater in auto and just turn heater temp up and down using the knobs. If i need aircon i just press max button on off aircon stays on. the only time i go into menu is to turn aircon off which is just like turning the radio channels. I think lane assist is good only comes on at 37mph great on motorways its not a jolt on the steering wheel more than a gesture.

Heater controls

In UK’s cold damp winters try demisting side windows on automatic it takes ages

In summer when you want to feel extra cool breeze on your face you cannot do that on automatic

Bring back nobs

Lane detection control

I regularly do 40+ miles an hour on my local country roads, it is not for the fainthearted to have lane control on and it scares the bejesus out of the wife when she is driving

Skoda Sat Nav give this a wide berth very disappointing

Before anyone says you should have realised this when you purchased the car try buying a SEL spec without buying into this rubbish.

On the + side

Love Adaptive Cruise Control

Electric front seats are Fab but would be perfect if it had the 3-memory function like the Superb.

Electric tail gate is exceptionally good

MPG on the 1.0 DSG is great on long journeys 60+ until the lockdown came short journeys lucky to get 35

Compared to the last 3 Fabia’s the electric seats are very comfy and no movement apart from when you want it.

The first yearly service next week, I have done 9000+ miles not had to top up the oil.

The lights are far better than my 5 previous Skoda cars

Great boot space

All round a great little car let down by over ambitious Heater controls and Lane detection.

You don't demist on auto you press the demist button (max) same if you want the cold air blowing on your face

Sorry

On Max my car just blows mainly on the front screen not on the side windows

I should add I have gone for the heated front screen option that works great but I still need more air on the side windows and max is not hacking it

  • 2 weeks later...

These gizmos put me off buying a new car. My Roomster is the last of the 'dumb' models and I am keeping it
