Engine oil for Sel first Edition 1.5 tsi

Featured Replies

Oil warning light came on today, telling me to add a quart of oil. The car is only 5 months old, so pretty shocked and disappointed. Been looking around but can't find what oil to put in. Anyone know please?

Just standard engine oil should be fine. I had to add some oil to my mark 3 car with the same engine last summer at a fairly low mileage. It's just had its first oil service and was back demanding more oil again a few days before the service. It seems to be a thirsty engine amongst other things, I've not had a car that used much oil for many years!

If it is just a top up then as per handbook, can top up with any multi grade oil.

If you want to try and run it for 2 years with same oil (not a great idea if it was that low that it needs a whole quart, (0.6 litre) as it would have over used existing oil)

If you need more than small quantity look for VW508 spec (easily obtainable, and usually in long list on back of container), Castrol Edge available at BP garages can be bought with that spec, probably many others eg Total Quartz

Thanks for this. It is going to the dealership today (for something else) but I am concerned it has used that much oil so quickly.

I had a mark III for 7 years and only had to top the oil up once in that time. 7 months into the mark IV and I am having to fill up! Sounds ominous to me.

New engines can require oil top up, so nothing unusual or to be disappointed about. Have you read your owners manual?

We're all supposed to be checking oil levels as part of regular maintenance so unless it was used over a very short period, the oil light shouldn't have come on.

I'm also surprised the car told you how much oil it wanted - normally it's just the oil warning light that comes on.

The other thing I find unusual is you say it asked for a 'quart' of oil? If your car was a set up for the USA then perhaps, but it asked for a quart of oil?  Who uses 'quarts' other than Americans?

As above.  And when an official VW group video on North America on checking oil says Quart, it needs remembered a US quart is not the same as and Imperial one.  As US gallons are less than Imperial gallons.     @SurreyJohn where did you come up with that bit about any multi grade oil.  That is so back a few decades and nonsense.

There are Oil Consumption threads in the various sections in Briskoda where the model has 1.5TSI engines.

Scala, Kamiq, Karoq, Kodiaq, Octavia and Superb.

Check the oil level when getting a new car and know where it is when Cold (then you can check before journeys) & when at Normal Operating Temperature, and check during the 'Driving in period'.

Thanks all. They topped it up and told me what oil to get if it needs topping up.

@OctaviaFirstEdit   Did they say how much oil it needed,

and where does it show on the dipstick if checked when cold without the engine being started?

?

What did the say to top up with, was it VW508 00 so 0w 20 Full Synthetic IV ?

He just said he topped it up! He told me 5W30 long life.

@OctaviaFirstEdit

?

Who was he, as in what is his job, was he a technician.

Your engine has VW508 00 oil in from the factory.   Topping up with a different spec like VW 504 00 so 5w 30 FS III which is a long life out is OK if needs must.

But

Your car / engine is nearly new and at least 7 months away from an oil change if you have it on Fixed Servicing.

(Your never said how many miles you car has done.)

Really is is advised to use the Recommended Oil for your car until it gets an oil and filter change.  that is 0w 20 FS IV.  / VW508 00

This was showing from Skoda rom the early launch of the 1.5TSI's.

The car has done 7,500 miles. Ex demonstrator. He was the technician at the dealership.

@OctaviaFirstEdit

?

Did you ever check the Oil from collecting the car until you got the warning.

Just to maybe let you and others know if their 'Technicians' ever bothered to be sure the correct oil level was there when you got the car.

So now your car might have half and half of the VW508 00 & VW 504 00 or maybe mostly VW504 00.

Sadly, I am no expert. In fairness, I asked him what to put in if I needed to. You expect a dealership to do what they are supposed to.

Rule of thumb is to never rev a gasoline engine above 3000-3500 rpm when new.

In terms of oil consumption, I think I have checked the car at around 3500-4000km, the engine oil was good and set to MAX.

Now the car has 5200km, so far so good.

In terms of the mileage it's maybe 60% city, 40% highway drive.
