Swapping out a bad DSG

Featured Replies

Hi all

Are there any issues swapping out a bad DSG for a good one from another marque? Say a Renault? If they are both a DQ250 02E is that good enough? Any special coding or reprogramming required?

To be honest, I haven't looked in to the technical side at all yet....just spit balling and getting ideas.

My 250,000km 2008 Octavia RS TDI has a bad mechatronic (unexpected gear selection fault) and I can get a low km DQ250 (50,000km) for a very good price. For the price I can get this new DSG for, it makes it cost effective to keep the Octavia for the kids rather than wreck it.

@Sc0tt Are there no Autobox specialists near you that can rebuild / recondition your DSG?

Yes, but would be starting at $3-4,000 and the car isn't worth repairing at that price. This DSG is $800, so worth the attempt. Just not sure if there is any manufacturer specifics or a DQ250 02E is the same regardless.

Hmm. I've heard of people trying to use donor DSG gearboxes from the same make or even across VAG marques VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat.  However, there are additional things to match like the 3 character identifier which I believe at the very least signifies the ratios used. I.e. a DSG DQ250 diesel vRS box will not have the same ratios as a DSG DQ250 Petrol.

Buying second hand, even supposed low mileage is always a risk.  It can pay off but "not guaranteed" to solve the problem!

Getting the gearbox specialist to help source and fit or endorse the gearbox you are looking at may provide some certainty.

I did not know the VW DSG boxes were installed in Renaults, are you saying they are?
