2018 Sportline 280 4x4 Servicing

Featured Replies

Hi all,

About to buy the above car and the dealer is saying its just had its 30k service this month (at 26k) but it was only oil + filter, and it had two the same in the years prior to that.

Seems odd that it has not had a major service with plugs and pollen filter by now. Shouldn't this be done at 2 years?

What else should have been done by thus age / mileage?

The dealer say it is on flexible servicing atm but has had oil every 10k (roughly).

Want to make sure its not going to cost me a bunch immediately!

Thanks in advance

Michael

Negotiate a deal with the dealer to take the price of plugs, filters, and haldex oil change. Filters are easy to DIY tbh and costs about 30 or so pounds for decent parts.

Haldex should be serviced at 30K miles.  As well as the oil in it being changed, the gauze strainer should be removed and cleaned.  This is not part of any VAG service schedule but it needs to be done to prevent it from clogging, stopping the Haldex pump from operating and potentially burning out.   I discussed this with the Service Manager in West End Škoda and they agreed to clean the strainer for a small extra charge.

Have you done it and did you get a photo of the state of the strainer before cleaning?

It be good to see how it's like at a particular mileage and also as proof they actually did the work!

Mine at about 21k isn't too bad. But it's clean now good until the next one probably 20k down the line, whenever I get there.

No pics.  The condition of mine at 32k miles, on a 185 bhp Yeti, probably doesn't bear much relation to yours at 21k, on a 280 bhp Superb.  There are also different road conditions and driving styles which no doubt affect the build up of matter in the strainer.

@amateurdad I've found my "How to guide" here:

As written there, I've changed the Haldex oil @ 45000 km. (roughly 30000 miles). It's the interval I've chosen, that fits my use, since the 3-year VAG recommended interval corresponds to nothing IMHO.

I hope the pics of the old oil conditions and the strainer will help you to get an opinion. Also have a look to both videos in the guide... ;)

Spark plugs are long life type and nominally 40k miles. However I just replaced mine for the first time at 60k miles and there was no noticable electrode wear, and no noticeable improvement with the new ones, so I wouldn't rush it!

Pollen filter is 2 years or 40k miles, (not sure why it would have a calendar life, but that is what it says). It cost me £8 for the pollen filter (non-OEM) and took about 10 minutes to change, so I dont think that can be a big deal even if you get the dealer to do it.

Brake fluid is after first 3 years, then every 2 years (although I am unconvinced that this is necessary with such frequency unless you are racing the car etc).

Engine air filter is 56k miles (90k km). Which seems quite infrequent, but I guess it depends on the environment you drive in

DSG oil change is 40k miles

Haldex (4x4) oil change is every 3 years. Seems odd that it is based on calendar time, not milage. I suggest this is one thing you definitely don't want to scrimp on, and I would have it done at least every 30k miles, and get the pump gauze cleaned. When I changed mine it was full of gunge, horrible and disgusting! (clutch fibres)

They try and flog you an aircon service every 2 years but I think that is a bit of a ripoff.

If you plan to keep the car, I would stick with fixed oil changes at 10k miles (well actually it's 9400 I think). Long life  / flexible oil changes are for people who will get a new car before this one has time to pack in.
