2009 Scout, I have a noise!

Featured Replies

Hey folks,

I have an annoying noise that I can’t seem to get fixed so looking for suggestions.

The car is a 2009 Octavia scout 2.0tdi with 180k miles and an almost full service history.

It had had a new clutch and DMF fitted in December and ever since its had some strange noises I can’t get to the bottom of. The clutch work could be completely unrelated but the timing is coincidental.

At first it sounded like a wheel bearing was grinding which embarrassingly turned out to be the wheels lined with dried mud grating on the callipers :-)

its now now progressed to a whine with an occasional drone that 2 garages have been unable to find/fix.

The noise use appears to be a quiet whine that is road speed related coming from the left front (could miss leading as its had to pinpoint) which is joined by a droning noise around 1800rpm when accelerating at slow speed away from a corner. It seems to be more prominent after turning right.

The first garage said they couldn't find the source but they did find a broken front spring which was duly replaced. The second garage could find anything but did find the prop shaft damper was coming apart.

So so still have a noise and can’t get to the bottom of it. I did think it might be a wheel bearing but have been assured it isn’t as they can’t find anything making a noise or feeling worn.

so, any suggestions on what to try?

thanks

It doesn't sound like your typical CV joint failing but you made no mention of it so it's a possibility.

A recording could prove invaluable to diagnosing things.

Tried recording it on my phone last night but it’s proved difficult to do.

the other issue I have it that it’s got all season tyres on it so there is a bit of road noise from them.

I will have another go at recording something.

Just been for a quick spin and failed yet again to record the noise. How do people manage to get a clear recording of this sort of thing :-)

one thing I have noticed is that the rear passenger side brakes are red hot after a couple of miles. Suspect a brake is binding but not sure if that’s in anyway related to the noise I get which seems to come from the front.

urgh!

Has anyone checked the rear wheel bearings?

It sounds like it comes from the front but I know that sounds can be deceptive.  The last garage claim they had it up on the ramp and checked everything which is what led them to the worn propshaft damper.

I just dug out my code reader and interestingly got intermittent errors for both front and the left rear ABS sensors.  I know the ABS ring is part of the hub so could that indicate anything.  No ABS warning lights

I am taking it to the local VAG independent specialist later to take a mechanic for a drive and see if we can identify it. It sounds like a wheel bearing to me but had 2 garages say no. Tempted to just start replacing bearings and see what happens. Add it to the list with the binding break!

2 mins with a mechanic from the local independent VAG garage and its booked in on Monday for a new front bearing and a new rear bearing.

The noises have been a bit intermittent but fortunately they were at full volume when driving out of the garage gateway

I had a fault on the front ABS sensor and it was the bearing that had gone (albeit no strange noises etc.) - so I think you could be onto a winner with new bearings!

So it’s looking like it’s the transfer box making the noise.

I suspect this is about to get expensive!
