Replacing 17 inch with 16 inch wheel s

Featured Replies

Hi, I know tyres have been done to death but just need a simple yes or no I have a 2010 superb estate with the 170 TDI and I find the 17 inch just too jarring so was wondering if I could swap them for 205 r16's  just want to check as they are not listed on my car so wanting to check this was to do with the original spec not any safety issue the spare is a 205 r16 but covered in 50mph only stickers. Sorry if it appears a bit thick but not mechanically minded so worry.

Yes the 205/55/16" will be fine, the base model (S) came with those from the factory.

I am surprised you find 17s too jarring though as I had no issues with the 225/40/18" on my 170 Elegance estate, how many miles has the car covered? maybe it needs replacement struts and shocks?

There are two standard specifications for the 16" rims on the Superb MK2s.

6Jx16 ET50

7Jx16 ET45

6Jx16 ET50 rims will give a more comfortable ride compared to the wider 7Jx16 ET45 rims, when fitted with 205/55R16 tyres.

Check what is stamped on your spare rim. It will probably be the narrower 6Jx16 ET50 size. You might need a magnifying glass as the markings are quite small. The stamped markings are near where the 5 wheel bolt holes are.

mytyres.co.uk are listing both sizes of 16" steel rims for about £40 each.

If you want a recommendation for tyres, I would suggest a good quality all-season tyre in size 205/55R16 91V. The V-speed rating is needed because the 170HP Superb MK2 can go over 130mph. I would go for the 91 load index and not the XL (eXtra Load) 94 load index, because the XL can have slightly stiffer sidewalls, which could make the ride slightly harder.

Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen-3 and Vredestein Quatrac are both available in the 205/55R16 91V specification.

126,000 when I got it, was an emergency buy as my old car got written off while parked. I am definitely after the more comfy ride from narrower tyres so thanks for the advice nice and simple like I asked for. The lad at the garage went over the suspension and all fine he said it looked looked good so think I dodged a bullet getting a car with no service history. (I did track most of it down after I got it).
