TPMS - Real one or monitor wheel turning speed like in MK2 vRS?

Featured Replies

Morning,

I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this one so hoping one owner could help.

Is the TPMS system in the MK4 Estate (2.0TDI SE L First edition) a proper electronic one, which provide the tyre pressure or is it like in my current MK2 vRS, where it simply monitor the rotation speed vs the other wheels?

I have a strong feeling that it is the latter as the manual does not mention pressure specifically.

Thanks,

Almost certainly the latter I'm afraid :worried:

The latter. I prefer it to be honest. Seen so many issues with proper tpms on other forums. This system works and is less of a pain if you're changing wheels etc.

If there's no way to see the tyre pressures and temperatures then it's 99% likely to be the ABS wheel speed based TPMS - and if those can't be seen even with a diagnostic tool then it's 100%.

I say 99% because an Audi B7 RS4 I used to own had sensor based TPMS but didn't show pressures/temperatures on either the infotainment or the instruments (Audi couldn't be bothered to write firmware).

Only thing I will miss from Renault. Renault has TPMS sensors in each tire that are very accurate. Only downside is if you have second set of tires, you need to buy additional valves and pair them with the car (100 euro for 4 tire set).

Renault TPMS sensors are very useful if you have low profile tires which are more sensitive to outside temperature changes. This way you can have detailed pressure information for each tire on the dash.

I’ll miss that too. My current 5’er gives you the psi for each tyre, rather than a general “there’s a problem” go check all four tyres. 🤣🤣🤣

In fairness the system does its job well.

Its purpose being to alert you of a potential issue with the pressures rather than an accurate readout of the pressures.

I've had it trigger twice. Once on my previous Octavia when I had a screw in the back tyre and once driving though Denmark and the front tyre was down a few PSI for some reason.

As above. The sensors can be expensive and cause additional expenses with tyre installation etc.
