How do I switch out my swing radio for an RNS510? Which parts do I need for bluetooth, GPS etc. and where can I find them?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum and have a Fabia II 1.6TDI 105.

The current radio in it is a 'swing' radio - I'm sorry, I don't know the code, as I'm new to working on VAG cars - but as I'm going to be doing more motorway driving after lockdown, I would like sat nav and bluetooth for music for the longer journeys. I have considered other options (Pioneer, Kenwood etc.) but I feel OEM parts would be a bit sleeker. I have narrowed it down to the RNS510 Colombus, but all the forums I've looked at either have no recent posts or don't provide the right information. All I need to know really is what parts I need to make the switch, where I can find them, and a rough guide of what I might need to do (eg recoding).

I hope you can help, thanks

hi

i have managed to change my stereo after a few weeks, it is quite awkward.

i got myself a single din stereo then hd to get a single din stereo converter adapter. i thought it was straight forward but it wasn't, had to get the harness too. problem was the stereo wont turn on if the ignition is off, if i had my original stereo then i can switch the stereo on without starting the car.

hope this helps.

I believe in the Fabia you need to upgrade the CAN gateway. I have something in my head about CAN 1.6 that the Fabia uses not being supported by the Columbus (needs 2.0 or something).

Otherwise it's a plug and play swap (once you have the correct facia adapter and GPS aerial).

For Bluetooth you also need an external Bluetooth module, wiring harness and microphone since the Columbus doesn't have any built in Bluetooth.

Actually. Looking into it, if your car is a facelift Fabia then it should have the 2.0 canbus already.

The Columbus shouldn't need a wiring harness since the Swing and Columbus both use a quadlock connector.

Thank you for helping out.

Yes, looking at it myself, it seems it is the facelift version, so I wouldn't need to upgrade the canbus, because it already has the 2.0 version - perfect.

So I would need a GPS aerial like this: GPS Module

a bluetooth module like this: Bluetooth Module

and a kit like this (includes microphone and harness): Harness + Microphone

Please let me know if this is wrong or I have missed something.

Cheers

What phone are you using? that 5N0 module is a premium one and it doesn't like iphones

This kit is a better offering

Using a samsung s20 but would be great to have the compatibility for resale or friends.

So i would just need your kit, the GPS module, and the head unit itself.

I notice in your pictures of the kit, you have some diagnostics up, is this then for recoding or is it literally plug and play as you say?

ideally the CAN  should be coded for telephone in the installation list. It will work with out

Diagnostics in pic is to show that it is working and to confirm part number

Your link for GPS module looks good and it has a right angle plug which is good too, so not to damage the wiring if there isn't much space.

Perfect, thank you very much for all your help, I will consider going ahead with it if I can find the funds!

Have a great weekend

Have a look here.

Try and avoid the rSAP modules. They basically connect to the SIM card in the phone and establish their own mobile connection. A lot of them don't support 3g and 4g either.

You want that supports HFP (Hands Free Protocol) and A2DP (Bluetooth Music streaming).

The wiring kit you need then doesn't need that little GSM aerial.

I got a wiring kit with just the harness and microphone and only paid like 30 or less for it.

I fitted a Amundsen in mine originally, then upgraded to Columbus as got a deal on one.

All plug and play with seperate bluetooth module, factory GPS / DAB / FM etc shark antenna,

Cannot remember which Bluetooth module I have, but works fine with Iphone and wifes Samsung......PS the one in your link is old (2008).....I would look for a newer one.

All then coded with VCDS.

Ok, so if the new radio part number is:

1Z0 035 680

Then which bluetooth module should I get with it? Is it one with the same code? for example, would this kit work: Bluetooth kit or this one from Eddie: Other bluetooth kit

At this point I am not concerned about price, just functionality and compatibility.

So if the head unit doesn't come with a GPS module, I would have to buy one still?

And then bluetooth modules/kits that I have mentioned above?

Cheers

If you def want a columbus then you WILL need a bluetooth module as above.

If you went down the RNS 315 route, then you can get them with Bluetooth "built in" so no need for the additional module.

Not sure what you mean by GPS module ?....... do you mean Antenna, then yes you will need one for either unit. The one linked earlier in the topic will work fine and can be situated "inside" the dash and will work fine.

The other issue is DAB, do you "want" it, if so you will need a DAB antenna as well.

My oringinal Amundsen was not DAB, although you can get them with it, thats the main reason I snapped up the columbus as I missed the DAB which is in my other car.

As mentioned above I fitted the genuine GPS/FM/DAB/GSM antenna.

"imo" if your not bothered by screen size and the ability to play DVDS (columbus) I would be tempted to look for a RNS 315 with Bluetooth and DAB especially if you have the maxidot dash as well.
