Have I just been unlucky ?

Featured Replies

Have I just been unlucky or are these engines fragile ?    (I think my engine code is "DBKA" ?)

I have recently bought a 2015 Greenline 3 with FSH showing 104k miles (bought in September 2020 with a 3 month warranty)

It had a New Timing belt kit & water pump fitted at 102k miles.

in January it came to a standstill on the motorway (mileage was then 109k)......  under the bonnet  it had a diesel leak..... and a failed Auxiliary / serpentine belt......   the really bad news - the auxiliary belt has managed to get into the Timing belt and has jumped several teeth......   most valves / rocker arms damaged and the Camshaft Assembly Unit is also mullered  (camshaft linking gears are bent ???)

Have I just been unlucky ?    or are these modern engines made of butter ?

What is my best option to get it back on the road again ?    (New / recon engine or repair ?)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Andy

Sounds like you have been unlucky. However you might still be within the 6 month window for the Consumer Rights Act. Speak to the garage and despite what they say they are liable to cover the car for 6 months against faults. The auxiliary belt might have been failing for a while. Worth a phone call and dont be afraid to qoute the CRA 2015 as it gives you protection. Even so the car has to be fit for purpose for 6 months as it is the law. Wear and tear like tyres, brakes isnt covered but your engine will be.

You may have been unlucky, what caused the diesel leak ? had you had a diesel filter change ? if the mk 3 filter is in the same place as a mk2 then an improperly fitted diesel filter lid can cause a leak. most engines of most ages with a cambelt will be in trouble if the belt goes enough teeth out of alignment.

Thankyou "Ecomat" and "seriesdriver",

The car is now being rebuilt..... the damage was extensive....  12 valves bent,  so they have all been renewed, plus all the rocker arms etc.....  the Head itself was ok, but has been skimmed and pressure tested ok.

Unfortunately the Cam assembly is also damaged (though it looks fine),  one of the two small cam meshing gears has rotated / moved alignment on its camshaft and it doesnt seem possible to readjust back to correct alignment...... so I am now trying to source one from somewhere cheaper than VW / Skoda...... any ideas ?  (Part Number 04L.103.308.C    V280)

Any help gratefully received

Andy

Try these guys https://www.synetiq.co.uk/

obviously used, not new, but they break thousands of late model cars, I’ve always managed to get what I need from them.
