Seatbelt replacement not winding back smoothly

Featured Replies

The front drivers seatbelt in my '04 Fabia is not winding back in effectively. It locks up fine when you yank it. I'm trying to find a replacement. It's partnumber is: 6Y0 857 702 A however I can't find any on eBay etc. Does anyone know if I could substitute it for a belt from a SEAT part no: 6Y0 857 702 B?

Thanks

Before you go spending money, you'd be worthwhile checking that nothing about where the reel sits in behind the b-pillar trim or anything there that guides the belt back in has broken or that the reel itself hasn't gotten clogged up with fluff. Pull the belt right out to its full length so you can see the spool in the middle and you should be able to see if there's anything there that shouldn't be.

I know it's not likely but it's worth a check if you haven't done so already.

Front seat belts, especially drivers side seem to have been a potential cause for annoyance on Fabias, Polos and Ibizas from this period of manufacture, when it started being a problem with my wife's 2002 Polo driver's one, I left it fully extended over a weekend as I thought it felt damp, that worked for while, next plan was to repeat letting it dry out and try to hoover out any fluff etc, followed by spraying it with furniture polish and rubbing it with a cloth to work it in and remove any excess that could stain clothes - it worked okay after that until we moved it on at 13 years and 135K miles, though it was never "aggressive" in operation from new anyway.

Try giving them a good clean

You may have sorted this by now but I had a similar issue on an 03 plate Fabia with a seatbelt not retracting.  These cars suffer from a well documented issue (search this site) of water leaking in through the rear window/doors and pooling in the rear footwell.  In my case this was causing the seatbelt and mechanism to get damp.  I only realised this when I had removed the seatbelt as the carpet around the base of the unit was damp and mouldy.  I pulled the seatbelt to its limit and carefully dried it with a hairdryer.  I did then give it a spray of furniture polish like run4mo suggested above, replaced it and sorted the rear window leak.  It worked perfectly for several years until we sold the vehicle.

Given the recent weather, I would suggest investigating this before replacement.

When weather improves get some hot water in a bowl extend seatbelt fully and immerse fully let soak, take out use some all purpose cleaner of your choice (or good old fashioned fairy liquid) rinse fully, and dry completely..... After doing all this, spray pledge on inside of seatbelt and watch how quick it retracts. If it doesn’t then you may have an issue, but worth a try before taking next step
