Slower with CAI?

Hey all.

Just fitted a c.a.i that was off my previous car, I dont know weather its just me, but it feels a bit slower. Could this happen?, or is it that im getting used to the power( ive had the car just over a week).

Or maybee its just the warm weather. I dont know.

I suppose the only way to tell would be a trip to the rollers.

Have you cleaned the filter?

Yes, cleaned it out with an air blower, and oiled it aswell

Hopfully not to much oil.

what make of CAI is it? some "cheaper" makes off EBay have been known to cause problems on the 1.8T engine.

Isn't a CAI just a lengthened tube with an air filter on the end? Wouldn't a flexi-hose to the radiator grille and sealed over the inlet pipe do a similar job?

My CAI uses the standard air inlet route from the wing....I have suplimented this with a flexi hose inputting from the lower lhs grill and into the filter heat shield.

The vast majority of CAI are a length of pipe with a filter...filter usually is placed behind the lhs headlamp.

My Carbonio works just fine :cool:

I've just had a look at the intake. Did you direct the hose into the inner wing and seal around the hose to create a 'box' in the inner wing or just attach the hose directly to the hole in the side of the airbox ?

the 'grille' in the lower passenger side doesn't have any holes in it! It could do with a few adding to it.

I have a Jabbasport CAI which has a heat shield around the filter and makes a seal with the bonnet.....I have the flexi tube plumbed into the heat shield.

Yes....I had to drill out the lower lhs grill...forgot about that. :o

I purchased a 3m length of 100mm ducting from a certain large DIY store on the way home from work (-only a fiver), but realise that it's a bit wide and probably don't quite need that much ! :D

As the Turbo heats the air will there be much point in attempting to collect slightly cooler air from the lower bumper region?

Looking at the inside of the top of th air box there is a removable 'ram pipe'. I assume that is better left in place to help with smoothing the air flow rather than having a step-change in cross-section (memories of lots of equations containg COSH terms....) at the MAF inlet although the effective area of the air filter is reduced considerably.

I'm slightly tempted to remove the grilles from the MAF housing.

I presumes (placing scientist's laboratory coat on :D ) that the idea here is that the colder the air you initially suck up, the more dense it is (therefore more oxygen it contains per unit volume).

So regardless of whether it expands again via heating as it passes through the turbo, you should still have more air entering the block if it is colder to start with? However I suspect that on the road, it makes no noticeable difference and might only account for a child-sized handful of horsepower when measured on a rolling road.

The main difference should be "seen" when on the move...sitting in traffic your shouldn't really see any real difference if any at all due to the air essentially being at ambinet temp....heat shields/filter encasements will reduce heat soak temps but not by great.

Rolling road may not seen gains as expected as you're not really getting the amount of air as per on the road.

I disagree.

The oxygen:nitrogen ratio will be almost the same whether it's cold or hot. The density of both will change.

The air pressure is limited by the wastegate actuator.

I've opened up the pseudo-grille next to the radiator grille, but having attempted to fit it today, -just as it started lashing down- the 100mm duct is too wide to fit between the battery and the inner wing without crushing it a lot.

when I find a length of flexible 75mm (3"), preferably plastic, hosing, I'll have a go at fitting it.

ps. The idle is definitely smoother having cleaned the MAF.
