While inspecting under bonnet re-previous thread on engine cover I noticed the orange reflection of the indicator bulb. This prompted me to have a look at where the bulb is located and access should replacement be necessary. 

I've since revisited and must say, if the occasion arises, it doesn't look like its a straight forward task.

Has anyone had to replace?

I have read somewhere you can’t replace fitted for life whatever that means 

I’m also looking at this. I’ll ask my dealer when I get a chance, but it does seem to be a “fitted for life” part.

the plastic housing seems to have weakened parts that can be cut out?

or it might be a whole unit out and unscrew it job.

I'd like to de-tango that front light unit and am asking the same question, presuming you have to remove the whole LED light unit which is quite likely an engine-out job!!!

I looked into it for my SE L and spoke tothe dealer who advised the whole front bumber and half the from assembly needs to come off to get at them.  So obviously not worth doing.  It seems strange to me that on the SE L Particularily every bulb is LED appart from the front indicators.  Why not just make them LED as well?  I get they are not the Full LED ones that you pay extra for but just flashing non scrolling indicators would have been so much better than 2 1920's bulbs IMO

The new Golf 8 is the same, if you get a basic R Line every bulb is LED apart from the front indicators.
