Electric car grant reduced, cap now £35,000

Featured Replies

The Department of Transport has changed the electric car grant

was £3000 and applied to cars under £50,000

now £2500 and applies to cars under £35,000

I believe prices are normally quoted net of the grant

But as many Enyaq's are likely to exceed the £35,000 before grant price will effectively go up £3000

I suspect the extra £3000 will be a surprise to those already ordered (most sales orders have small print clause that if taxes etc change, buyer is liable for rates in force at time of delivery or invoicing)

I don't think configurator has been changed yet to reflect these changes

As I understand it, any car ordered before 18th but not yet processed through the grant portal will still get the grant as it was at time of ordering. So if you have ordered an Enyaq before yesterday, you are OK. This has been reported in the Telegraph and I had sight of information on the grant portal explaining it.

I predict a list price decrease in the future ;)

Hopefully of at least £4k.

Hopefully even more than £4k.

EV's of all makes are still way over priced & the "cost to change" for the low mileage user who has a choice (ie. is not forced into EV ownership because of where their live) is just not cost effective. There is no earthly reason why an EV should be more expensive than an ICE equivalent.

As much as I'd like to I will not be joining the EV "revolution" for a while yet.

When I do it make the switch to an EV it will be a small city / supermini size vehicle (the Enyaq is way too big) which is not currently available as part of Skoda's EV range since the demise of the Citigo which has its limitations for what we need. As far as I know there is no Fabia EV planned either so that means we will be looking elsewhere for a used / nearly new Corsa-e, e208, 500e, Cloe or similar with a range of at least 180-200 miles.

My estimation is that it will be at least 2 years before I can consider an EV that meets our budget.

The MG EV's are the best value Medium sized ones in hatch or estate but you will not likely get 200 miles on a charge in the best conditions with actual people in the car needing Climate / AC on.   150 miles ish, as with the Peugeot / Vauxhall-Opel, Citroen-DS, Fiat etc etc, unless driving and getting lots of regen.

Then best possibly and likely the affordable choice is a Zoe, new or used.       MG's & Renaults sometimes now sold at the same dealers, as will the Dacia EV's when they are available.

Skoda have updated the website,

now says electric car grant only available on Enyaq 60 Nav, Loft, Lodge

Does it put you off buying, or will the prices come down, I would want a 80 with bits to equal ID4 or sport line version

I drive a 47 kWh car right now (Tesla model 3), 60 is more than enough unless you are regularly doing really long distance trips (like 400 miles a day), buying an 80 would mean paying more than I need to for my normal day to day driving.

I hate when manufacturers use names for trim levels. I don’t know what that means. I know what S, SE, SEL, LX mean 😂

Skoda lost the plot when they started calling the most basic cars 'S', then ones Monte Carlo when they were show without go, they called the Suspension 'Sports',

& then had a model called a Rapid 'Sport' 1.2TSI 105ps.   Then had a Rapid Spaceback.

Government has reduced grant to £1000 now

There was a few days transition for orders in progress when change was implemented. (announced 15th December, claims could be made for orders for 7 days)

Seems that no Enyaq is eligible anymore, although those that can afford a £34k - £50k car probably don’t need a £1000 subsidy anyway

@SurreyJohn?

Is this on a Government press release?

The Media were all saying a £1,000 cut to a £1,500 grant.

EDIT.   Max grant £1,500

£32,000

unless a WAV & then £35,000.

https://www.gov.uk/plug-in-car-van-grants

Makes total sense to stop encouraging the absolute rip off price being charged for EV versions of vehicles compared to the ICE versions,

and then a Family / Business sized EV car can easily be £32,000 and perfectly comfortable and well built and retail for £32,000 in the UK.

As can light commercial EV's.

In Germany the grant is 9,000€.

So you can pick up a new Dacia Spring for 10,000€ (after the grants).

Just glad I got my iV60 with the government grant while I could, as there are no Enyaqs on the list now. Get wall boxes installed before that grant goes as well  (one day or another).

I made a mistake, cut was £1000 from £2500 to £1500

I wrote it wrongly as cut to £1000

Apologies

The threshold was cut from £35,000 to £32,000

Skoda has reissued the Enyaq price list dated 15th December and all references to some cars being eligible have gone as prices for all versions are over £32,000.  Link to price list below.

If the government are serious about getting people to switch to EVs, they could scrap charging VAT on car EV sales.

This would more than compensate for the missing "grant" and act as a genuine incentive to buy an EV.

I suppose that assumes the government believes that EVs will help stop the damage caused by climate change, and prioritises stopping climate change above raising tax revenue.

The Government needed not to give anymore help to manufacturers or dealerships as every EV that anyone can get into the UK is selling.

There are none sitting struggling to find buyers.

Now the government / treasury / tax payers can get some income in to make up for the loss of VED, and plenty taxes in from the electricity bought and they can get taxes from the companies charging high prices per kWh for their public charging, but then they will not be UK owned businesses as more providers are bought by foreign investors over and above those already owned buy Sovereign Wealth Funds of Oil Producing countries.
