Sigh ... 2nd year service result.

Strangely enough the only two oil over-fils I have ever in my life are from VAG dealers doing in-warranty scheduled maintenance.

The problem is the dealers use apprentices to do all the oil changes I think.

pfft.

I have probably done at least 50s oil changes in my life and never made this sort of mistake.  It's not difficult to creep up on the correct level with the minimal amount of experience. AND when you work on the same engines day-in day-out you should be able to do this with nothing more than a good measuring jug. You know exactly how much to add.

I took my fairly new Mondeo TDCI back to a local dealer to complain about it being overfilled , only to be told patronisingly, don't worry it's a diesel. I waited whilst they drained it to the correct leve, gave them back the 13mm ring spanner, which I found, left by the original mechanic, trapped under the bonnet and never went back.

The Area A on the dipstick is above the cross hatch area if you look in the manual.

The dipsticks and owners manuals are crap.

Cold levels are easy to check, and many many workshops are putting the measured quantity of oil in from a pump, not a bottle or jug.

(That requires someone to select the quantity to be delivered by knowing what vehicle / engine it is and not just trusting to 'i remember'

or they all take this much.).

The @ operating Temperature / @ Normal Temperature / Hot check are the important one many Techs / Fitter / Apprentices get wrong.

(We do this everyday, we know our job!.  Crap is regularly spouted.)

Many are sucking the oil out and then changing the sump plug and some are not changing the sump plug.

Then many are not doing the road test after the oil and filter change and then checking the oil level and topping up if required.

Yeah not a fan of the dipstick and poorly embossed cross-hatching. A is where the dipstick is bent. We are definitely over that :)

Quite right too, if the spanner was not worth adding to your toolbox (Snap On etc) then he amateurs should not be entrusted with your vehicle :D

If ever you want to buy a cheap Snap On 10mm combination spanner find someone that works at laundry that does the overalls for garages, its their number one find.

I've always wondered why dipsticks are dark in colour...rather like the oil. What's wrong with a white one to better see the level. There's probably a sensible reason but I can't see it.

What a good point.  Perhaps coz it makes it less easy to spot woefully inept staff who are incapable of filling a bucket (sump) to the correct level :mmm:
