Reducing exhaust soot?

Featured Replies

Someone has told me that a K&N panel filter combined with a bigger Seat inlet pipe will cut down on the amount of soot that the wifes VRS kicks out.

Is this true? Car has the AMD 1 click and I have noticed a lot of soot on acceleration when following behind in my car.

Any diesel wil lproduce a certian amount of soot. Cars fitted with particulate filters are the exception to that rule (but only Octavia 2 and Superb have these systems so far). Some have reported that the bigger inlet has reduced soot, not really sure how but its worthwhile doing anyway.

Granted, but there is quite a lot and it would be nice to reduce it. She doesn't really need any more power, but if it helps, I'm willing to give it a spin!

Anyway of increasing soot? Mine never smokes and sometimes I think it'd be satisfying to leave a little cloud behind me. :D

Will turning the EGR down reduce soot?

You've got a differently spec'd engine, though...

Propane injection might help. :) I'll let you know in a week or so.... I'm officially the smokiest Fabia on Briskoda.... in fact in the world, so a good test for it.

In thoery it should increase it by turning it down, as the idea of it is to reduce soot. Less exhaust gases coming out of the exhaust and all that.

speak to the man in post 7 , he knows a lot about soot

How much HP and lbs torque does your car produce?

:D I may have the ultimate switchable smoke machine on my hands soon though.

Adding 2 litres of 100% biodiesel to a tankful of mineral diesel greatly reduces soot output, and makes the engine run smoother.

Unfortunately. Its goodbye warranty

Not so, they permit a percentage of bio diesel IIRC on the Fabia.

turn off the EGR, get the PD160 inlet pipe, and im sure you'll be fine mate.

Yep a 5% blend of biodiesel in mineral diesel is acceptable although I forget whether they advise the filters are changed more frequently. I believe that have to do this as a 5% blend is commonplace on the continent....

Chris

ISTR they change the fuel filter twice as often.

:( Sorry Ross. I remember some thread saying that it was. Must have read it wrong. slap...slap ;)

Sorry guys, but I have no idea what EGR is?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. Basically pumps (part of?) the exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions out the back. Side effect is you get more soot/cr@p going into the engine rather than out of the exhaust.....

OK, so how do you mess around with that?

get VAG-COM, it cant be truly turned off but can be backed off to the point where it might aswell be turned off.

  • Author

Sorry, Hellfire, I'm confused by your posting?

VAGCOM = a software package that with the appropriate cable can be used to alter settings/read settings etc on your car's engine (and other) management modules. There are some guides on the site here :)

Diesel's smoke. Unless it's excessive why worry, or spend money bothering with it?
