Diesel's smoke. Unless it's excessive why worry, or spend money bothering with it?

Guess it depends how much you like wasting fuel (smoke/soot is part-burnt diesel) and cleaning the rear of the car ;)

EGR can be turned off with a bit of steel plate. ;)

But the engine light comes on though, but I'm hoping to sort a way around that soon. :cool:

Just find someone local with a laptop, the cable and the VAG-COM program and get them to near as damnit turn off the EGR Valve, smoother idleing is definately noticable and less soot under hard acceleration, however the PD160 intake may of contributed towards this.

I would say it is excessive. Kicking out a load of sooty smoke is way less than cool if you ask me and it is definately made worse by the AMD 1 Click.

I've had plenty of cars that are way faster than a Fabia, so please don't tell me it's the price you pay for performance...

Yes but in theory if there is more air then the air mass meter will pick it up and increase fueling to suit.

Why would turning the EGR operation off lessen soot? You re increasing exhaust flow by turning it down. Also EGR only operates when cruising not accelerating. And the point of EGR is reducing soot by reburning exhaust gasses again.

I can only go on IMO Ross. It feels like it does on mine, even if it's a placebo affect it's worth it for the smoother idleing and not clogging the engine with soot which over time can only hinder performance.

Still confused, then! I think I'll try the intake and air filter as it seems to make sense that more oil will burn, hence less soot.

The Fabia really is a fab (pun??) little car. If MrsF didn't have one already and I didn't get Ford staff discount, I'd defo have one. Currently averaging 26.5mpg on the Focus ST as opposed to nearly 50mpg with the Fabia. :rolleyes:

thats not to bad for the ST ,i know someone who was doing 18mpg when running in ,gone up a bit now though

That entirely depends how much you depress the loud pedal!!

IMO and I'm not an engineer, just like reading stuff.

Soot is produced because the fuel's not burnt properly. In order to produce max. power, more fuel is injected than can be burnt. Hence, black smoke.

Can reduce soot by....

- Burning a fuel with less complex carbons - add a bit of bio-diesel etc.

- Particulates filter or catalytic converter.

- Afterburning the exhaust with fresh air (AIR type system).

- Tuning (turning down the wick a bit or similar).

The obvious one to try is biodiesel or simple veg. oil added in small quantities.

Tuning: The size and responsiveness of the fuel injectors partly determines the effectiveness of the fuel/air mix. Diesel injectors aren't cheap though and overdriving them will cause them to wear out quicker.

I don't know the size/cost of catalysts for diesels but sized properly, that could be one way to go in order to produce a socially responsible sleeper vehicle that goes like stink (pardon the pun :) ).

Particulates filter is very effective too, and IIRC they're now fitted to the newer models to meet EU IV spec. That said it is restrictive which isn't great.

Still awaiting the yes/no for the LPG - as that makes the burn more effective as well :)

Yes install the pd160 inlet and the additional air will cut a small amount of soot out.

Best of all get a remap that will do this!

The lowest polluting pd engine the 3 cyclinder pd75 has an excess of air via the turbo at all engine speeds and it's not possible to see any emmisions.

This shows that matching the right amount of fuel and boost together will give improve stochiometric combusion.

And how often are these racing engines serviced or stripped down and rebuilt? ;)

Hi Chris,

To my knowledge Allard's PD150 engine, which I understand was bought from a breakers, hasn't had to be re-built - it's that strong. However, they have added racing pd injectors - how many people have the expertice to do that + a experimented with many hybrid turbos + used different exhaust systems (i think they asked to test some of the 'milltek' products) plus they have gained an enormous amount of expertice mapping diesels. A guesstimate is that at least 80% of their business involves one of the many iterations of the vag pd engine.

I guess what Iam saying is they put their money in racing tdi's- who elkse does that !!!

Superchips race TDi's with VW Racing.

Superchips do not race 1 tdi.

The only people that race tdi's are vw themselves the caddy.

Exeter diesels run a 2.o tdi mkv golf ,and

Giles Lock runs an old caddy.

Superchips have a contract with vw to rolling road test competitors cars. Superchips do not race their own tdi !

No but superchips map the Caddy, along with most of the other VW racing cars, inc the Polo GTi I was helping them with a few weeks back.

That's true but their comitment is limited in terms of scruteenering competitors which I believe they gain knowledge from and same money?

For example, at Oulton Lloyd Allard attempted a 2nd gear getaway in the first race, it didn't go as planned and was hit from behind with damage to the rear axle + bodywork + wheel + disk + suspension. So they have to spend quite alot repairing for Donington which was 4 weeks away. It's this kinda commitment that Superchips, Jabba, Revo, et al don't put into a tdi.

Just because a company races, it doesn't mean that their aftermarket kit is good.

I know of one motorsport company (with more than one UK touring car trophy in the cupboard) totally ballsing up left right and centre on customers cars, not to mention copying other peoples ideas.
