Transfer Box failed - Warranty Company refusing to pay

Featured Replies

Hey All,

Any advice would be fantastic as i'm having a hellish time

My Skoda Yeti recently was diagnosed with a failed transfer box - oil was leaking from it.

It's a Yeti Elegance TSI, 1.8, 2011.

The mechanic said it would need completely replacing and components weren't replaceable as were inside of transfer box.

The warranty company have asked the mechanic to dismantle transfer box from car to determine the problem.

However, as above the mechanic has refused based on the grounds that the transfer box needs replacing and therefore does not want to take transfer box and wait from claim to be rejected or refused and me to have to pay for labour, and for them loosing time whilst car is on lift.

The warranty company says they cover transfer box components - it doesn't mention that it covers transfer box, but then again it doesn't mention that it doesn't. However if the components cannot be replaced I don't know what this means.

I'm not entirely sure what my question is. I'm at a loss. I've been quoted between £2800-£3100 for parts and labour which I can't afford and I only purchased the car 7 months ago.

I'm guessing I'm wondering whether parts/components can be replaced on a transfer box on this car spec - and if not whether the warranty can refuse the claim?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Terry

All the parts are available, yours will probably only need an oil seal, circa £3000 sounds about right

This is for my transfer box, a later model year than yours but you will be able to go back to select the right model year and then forward again, its under the front suspension section and not gearbox.

Part number 6 or 9.

£3000 to replace a seal ?????? If that is correct I’d go for a scrapper transfer box.

Hi. I'm not able to help with your immediate problem but seeing it is a 2011 car and we are now in 2021 it must be close to its 10 year anniversary, an age where warranties on lots of things, not just cars, can get "interesting". Clearly the warranty company isn't keen to spend out £3,000 on a car that's probably not worth a lot more than that. If you haven't already done so I would get a letter off to the warranty company documenting the problem and what you are expecting of them, whether that is a repair of the existing box (pointing out your mechanic says it is not possible) or fitting a refurbished or even second hand unit. I would also include a specific timeframe that you want this resolved in pointing out the problems not having the car on the road is causing you. Send it by registered letter requiring a signature and keep a copy of the letter and print off the delivery receipt to keep with it. (my practice is never to rely on being able to get it later "if I need it"). This way if the car passes its 10 year anniversary or the warranty expires you have it clearly documented when the problem was identified and you won't be relying on any emails or notes from phone calls and that should help you if you have to start a formal dispute.

Sorry about your problem, it's probably taken the shine off what have been for many people a very good and reliable car.

Thanks all.

I’m waiting to take it into a third garage to see whether they can do this.
last garage I took it into leak has since worsened.
Warranty company are refusing payment based on the fact that transfer box isn’t covered, only components.

The transfer box is a collection of components so no idea where they get to that from whatever the T&C,s / exclusions in their Warranty they sold you.

Hi

Thanks. Yeah I can see that from the diagram attached in the previous post

however I’m finding that garage won’t take apart as transfer box as they say it needs replacing. The warranty company only cover replacement of components

Is the oil seal not a component?

£5.88 for the seal, some transmission fluid and labour, £3000 sounds about right!

Have you asked the warranty company to provide details of a garage who will carry out the repair they're prepared to pay for.

I'm afraid I have to agree. At 10 years old most failures would be considered fair wear and tear.

Interestingly a friend has just received a (main dealer) quote for £3k to replace the same unit on a 2014 Superb 4x4, due to a leak - WBAC time.............

I recently sold my Yeti, due a sunroof leak, which was uneconomical to repair. I replaced it with a 19 year old Jaguar XJ8 and the trader was kind enough to advise against any warranty, as in his words it 'wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on' given the age of the car.

I recall asking Skoda for a quote to extend my warranty at 3 years old on a 4x4 Diesel Yeti and was amazed at the cost. £780 / year, which speaks volumes regarding the likelihood of costly failures.

Sorry to hear of your predicament.

thanks again for replies

so you reckon it might just be a seal that needs replacing? How can I be sure? Just wait it out?

I’ve spoken to the warranty company to provide a garage willing to take the work, and they haven’t responded.

If it is leaking from one of the output seals ie not a cracked casing (unlikely) and there is no radial movement of the flange then you can be reasonably certain that it is simply the seal that has failed. If there is movement then a bearing will have failed & the seal failure is a consequence of that, in both cases its repairable but garages choose not to, and all the time there are pigeons who will pay £3K then they will continue.

I asked a trusted local specialist who has looked after all my VAG cars and he wasn't keen to get involved in replacing seals and advised my friend with the Superb to take it to a transmission specialist.

He suggested the smartest move might be a refurbished transfer case.

Thanks.
that’s a good suggestion

I don’t suppose you or anyone has any good contacts in London or thereabouts?
