Kodiaq 2021 towbar issues

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I own Kodiaq Scout. After i got the car i went to the dealer to get a towbar installed and surprise...it seems that the tow bar they have in the catalogue cannot be fitted on my specs.

I have the 2.0 147kw Tdi and it seems that for cars after week 39/2020 it cannot be fitted if the car does not have tow bar preparation from the factory (it does not have).

I could not get an answer from the dealer on why is that, if there are other options, if i cannot ever have the original one installed (i don't want to lose the warranty by going for aftermarket options).

What can i do?

Could be a few things.

I understand that some combinations of tow require an improved cooling system (that's the factory tow prep bit).  In theory that wouldn't stop the tow kit from being installed, just that it's not 100% kosher.

It could also be that in your market they don't have regulatory approval for the combination of drive-train and tow kit.  Some markets require crash tests, fuel economy tests or other homologation type things that if the manufacturer doesn't bother to get approval for with that particular combination, manufacturer is hesitant or unable to offer (low appetite for risk).

I don't know where you are and don't know your market, but an aftermarket kit is possible.  As to its effect on the warranty, that depends on your local regulations.  Here in 'straya they can't just void a whole warranty because a part was installed, instead they'd have to demonstrate that it was the installation that caused the fault that was claimed under warranty.  It requires arguments and legal threats but the manuf will often settle after that.  Your region might vary.

If you update your profile to include your country and region, someone local might be able to offer a more accurate insight.

Hi, I'm the EU, Romania to be more specific.

It seems that this became unavailable starting week 39/2020. Don't think they changed the coolong system at that point.

I think from week 39/2020 is when changes were made to specification

Because it is engine type specific, I am guessing the engine was changed to a new emissions rating, and it has not been tested and certified.

I don’t really know, but my guesses include needs upgraded cooling, the extra 25kg of kit increase emission rating.
