"Data transfer is currently set to..." message?

Featured Replies

In the last few days, every time I've used the car this message (see picture) has popped up on the Infotainment screen and I don't know what it means or what I can do to stop it appearing.   It says I should go to the control centre to find out "what it entails" but I can't find anything there that helps explain it or stop it happening.

I know others have complained about this kind of thing but it really is very bad user interface design that messages like this can appear while driving.  Reading the message while on the move is difficult and potentially dangerous as is pressing an OK button in the middle of the screen to clear it, and yet it covers up everything else (like satnav) so sometimes you can't just ignore it until the next time you've stopped at a junction or similar.

This is on a recently bought VRS TSI estate - a really lovely car to drive but with a lot of irritations related to the Infotainment and assist systems, of which this is just the latest.

From my experimentation on my new car yesterday, I think this is an option in the users section, under privacy or something similar (sorry at work so can't quickly check). Why it suddenly decides to tell you is another matter... maybe it loses data connection then when it regains it, reminds you of your settings.

Yes, its in the User permissions setup. The more open you are with the permissions the more features become available, such as Parking Location in the smartphone app.

From memory, it only displays this message if you save the S-PIN but can’t remember and my car is at the dealers at the mo.

Has anyone got an answer to this? I have a new Scala and the entertainment system is constantly giving me this message and another about “data transfer”

As soon as I engage reverse the screen is filled with one of these messages. There appears to be no way of stopping them

This is all covered in the manual.

It's about the level of data sharing you make available via the settings, the more data you share the more and better services available to you.

If you choose to restrict the data you share, and opt not to share location data, you won't be getting rescued if you plummet down a ravine.

Yes I know that. I’ve set data to totally unrestricted and to share location.

The problem is the messages keep appearing on the screen when I start the car, put it into reverse or at anytime the system feels like it.

I just want the messages OFF

I'm pretty sure that is in the manual too.

You are controlling data, which includes any passengers, and are therefore subject to GDPR.

As a real world example (which honestly was at least in my manual!) you may have a new passenger in your car who objects to their data being shared (and it is, even if just their location) then you have the ability to and have to adjust the data sharing setting so it does not share the car's location.

This is why the message comes up every single time you start the car.

I could put up with it coming on when I start the car, but when I engage reverse??
I was recently a passenger in a friends Karoq- at no point did these messages appear.

Checking the forum it does appear it’s not just happening to me. The only person who stopped the messages appearing was by selling the car

My Octavia MK4 used to do it and my Superb does it. I have it set to full data sharing, maybe that is the only setting displays the message?

I'm guessing it may well be, hence for the GDPR reasons outlined it has to display the message. On the lowest setting it perhaps won't show the message, as there'd be no reason for it to do so. But then no location sharing and no help following an accident...

I know it's easy for me to say and it's different strokes for different folks, but it's just one of those things at start-up I don't think about. I don't find it any more onerous to press 'Okay' to clear a message, as I do to press the button to switch the radio on.

You say it does it when engaging reverse - is that just as you are putting it in reverse when you have just started the car, or as in even if you have been driving for an hour and then engage reverse it does it then?

I also have this setting set to full data sharing and I never get this message. I got it once or twice when there were issues with car's internet connection a few months back. Other than that I never get it.

Okay, interesting...

Let's compare more notes then.

I have my account set-up, having registered on the infotainment using both keys.

I don't use an s-pin to login.

(Bearing in mind I am in a different model, but the principles appear identical from my experience with my Octavia).

The messages appear whenever I engage with the screen. So that’s when I first start the car. If I have to reverse then the reversing graphic appears and when I come out of reverse then the screen puts up the data message. It then appears at random points during the journey.
I can’t remember registering using my car keys or entering a PIN.

I did register using the MySkoda Apple Ap and in security it’s set to use Biometric ID instead of S-PIN

Could be the S-pin the difference here? I think I did use the S-pin when I first logged in in the car. Do you know how can I check?

I’ve turned off biometric login and attempted to change my S-PIN. The system said I’d got it wrong so I had to reset it.

The app then said I needed to re-register with the car console and gave me a code to enter to re-register

Got in the car and went to registration. There was no option to re-register so I deleted the main user. Still no option to add a user! There were now no users for the car?
Rebooted the console (long press on the ON/OFF button) The registration login appeared and I entered the code and I was accepted as the main user.

Went back to the MySkoda phone app which indicated I had to be verified. Clicked on verify and accepted the conditions. App said I was verified.

Not driven the car yet so have no idea if this has worked……I have a feeling it hasn’t.

When I had registered in both cars with both keys it tried to get me to use an s-pin, but both times I have selected the tickbox that allows you to not need to punch in an s-pin.

It sounds like we basically can't win, as you either have to punch in an s-pin or bypass that and still have to punch in an 'Okay' to dismiss the data sharing message.

@Andyb100 seems to have an additional issue though if it comes on randomly.

In my Octavia (for all its problems) and the Superb I got/get that message within seconds of starting the car, but it correctly doesn't display again once dismissed.

It does seem inconsistent.   I haven't seen this message for a long time now, even though it was I who started this thread.  I also have full data sharing enabled.

I think I only get this message if the unit is switched off when I start the car. If it's on, then I get the user choice screen but no privacy notice - at least not one that I need to interact with.

@Gax is the S-Pin intendent to be entered each time when you turn on the car?

I haven’t had the data sharing message in months, my s-pin is saved so doesn’t require entering.
Referencing the above post, I never turn the head unit off, I just take the key out. It turns on itself when the car unlocks - Could be worth a try?..

I believe it is to stop anyone using the car with your personalisation settings, so the option to disable the s-pin is basically telling the car you are happy for all drivers to use the main login when the car starts up.

Which may also be why the data-sharing message appears, to advise whoever todays driver is (and their passengers) that their location is constantly being shared.

@VinzClortho I never turn my head unit off in the Superb either, but I do receive the message on each start-up. (I don't mind though, although the apparent anomalies are curious).

That’s a shame, would be great if it was a simple fix. Your suggestion about privacy seems right, weird that @alancha is getting it on the reversing camera screen though.

I get the ‘welcome username’ screen which disappears after a couple of seconds but that’s it.

I also get only the welcome username screen.

Hey, did you manage to get rid of this message?

I just bought a Scala (2022 plate) and am getting a bit fed up with this message constantly appearing...

  • 3 months later...

Any one manage a fix on this.

I have got this on my screen now.

Only a clock showing on the screen.

No radio and the info icon at the bottom doesn't show anything when touched.
