Kodiaq buying advice please...

Featured Replies

No need to avoid DSG automatic if you’re concerned about power.

The old torque-convertor automatics used to sap a bit of power (lost in stirring the oil around), but a DSG has clutches and cogs, just like a manual gearbox, and puts the power to the wheels just about as efficiently as a manual.

My leaning, for a car without excess of power, would be to choose the DSG.  If the smaller engine means more frequent gear changing, you are conscious of that with a manual.  With the DSG you’re not. You get to a motorway incline and perhaps need to down a cog; the DSG will do that for you (and you won’t even notice, unless you look at the rev counter).  The net effect is that the DSG feels more capable.

It also changes from one gear to another very rapidly, so if it is working hard it doesn't lose so much momentum between gears.

Well the deal has been done on the low mileage grey petrol SE 4x4 manual with options and a couple of 'sweetners' from the dealership.  SWMBO was happy with it and in the end didn't want to stump up the extra for an SEL...

I'll see what the lights are like when it arrives and work out what to do with them then but, in the meantime, I'm investigating tow bars and reverse cameras and any other tweaks.

So thanks for all the advice!

Hi all,

Just waiting for a day to collect it now but, in the meantime...

  • It was 1st registered in mid-March 2018 - Is it possible that it will have the silica bag in the coolant reservoir?  I recall seeing G13 on the header tank when looking under the bonnet but don't recall seeing the 'mit silikat' wording?  I can take a look when I collect it but just wondering if it's something I should get the dealer to check / remove in case it does have one and it splits when I remove it?
  • It has a Bolero - is it worth asking the dealer to check it is updated before delivery or is Pab on here my best bet.
  • Re the above Bolero - is there a size limit on SD Cards and what format does the card / files need to be and what size album art?  (in the Swift I use WMA but some art shows up and some doesn't).
  • In terms of headlights - are the dipped and main H7 and the Fogs H8 (currently looking at Twenty20 +150% replacements given recent reviews)
  • Can cornering fogs, left mirror dip and off-road display be enabled?

And lastly - has anyone done an LED headlight unit retrofit?  I've read somewhere that the connectors might be different and no doubt control modules and coding would be needed but LED units are now relatively cheap second hand...   (the alternative might be if Osram finally do a Kodiaq retrofit unit like they have done for some golfs etc...)

Cheers

Yeah I saw them...   Even more expensive than OE...   So hoping for a cheaper way

Yeah would just be getting better bulbs like you said...

I'm surprised that OE costs less though?

You will also need the hardware for self levelling and headlamp washing that your car may physically not have. Without it your install would not be legal, and will dazzle oncoming traffic.

Unless I'm mistaken, it was you who asked about a retro fit reversing camera :wondering:

I did. To assist in hitching my caravan up when on my own.
Not for just reversing.

Trucks have rear cameras for the same reason.

Gosh. A truck with a caravan. And that’s the reason trucks have cameras?

Pull the other one. 😄

As Tom Jones sang, it is not unusual,  as seen with Fairs, Carnivals & Circus's moving from place to place.
