Fabia VRS issues!

Featured Replies

Morning all

the wife recently acquired a 60 plate VRS with 90k on the clock for £900 needing a new clutch

managed to get this done for £600 so all in car was a bargain so we thought

the first day she drove it the EML started flashing on and off and there was a judder as she called it.

she switched it off and on and it went away

i researched it on here and saw the spark plug issue which we are fitting new Denso ones this evening but this morning she had more issues

same stretch of road tootling along at 30 same judder flashing EML etc so switched it off and on and then she said the engine rattled like mad on idle.

i presume it would be ideal to get the timing chain replaced so have been quoted £250 for this to be done but what else could it be?

She has said this is the last thing she is doing if it doesn’t work then she’s getting rid!

Anyone had the same issues or any more info re this for guidance would be great

thanks and sorry for the long story!

Welcome.  First get the spark plugs out and inspect them. Keep them in order and photograph them.  When was the 'water pump' changed if ever, and the 2 belts?   The supercharger magnetic clutch can have the car going into limp mode and the EPC or Exhaust emissions light on or both, as can misfires with a plug failing .   Misfires need to be enough on a cycle to log.  You want the fault codes read and see if there are any codes other than 'misfires'.  Hold off the timing chain and tensioner replacement until you see how things are with the new plugs in. New coils might be required but wait and see.

Thanks for the reply Roottoot

i am not sure if the water pump has ever been replaced or what recalls have ever been done on it.

no codes were stored the first time it happened but not sure about this time my son scans them for us but he’s at work till later today.

the guy that did the clutch said the chain needs replacing and advised us not to drive it too far or hard until it had been done but apart from the slight rattle on cold start up the engine is as quiet as a mouse when stopping at traffic lights it’s as if it has start stop as you can’t hear the engine at all.

Maybe put the reg up?  someone on hear might know the car and give you some information on it

Hi Madvlad65

it DA60 WUE

thanks

engines are not supposed to rattle full stop...............so if theres a noise thats noticable, I would be getting to the bottom of it asap and not use the car until its fixed.

Is that reg correct ???

Reg number ok on Ask MID for insured but not showing on DVLA MOT checker.   Was it on a personal plate until recently?

Just put her private plate on it VR51 BEC but didn’t think it would have changed so quick

It is a Mk2 VRS that once failed on 0position / sidelights not working because of the tester not knowing the DRL,s were sidelights when less bright.  ?  How many previous Registered Keepers.    Skoda UK / main dealers can give the history they have. Check if the original engine or a replacement.

just called the local Skoda and got told the engine was replaced in 2012 for the oil issue, i asked for the print out of history and details but its Skoda's property but he told me to call Mitchell Skoda where the work as done.

not sure of the number of past owners atm as i am at work.

i did have to fill the header tank last night though as, as the wife said it binged at her and this funny red light was on!

header was almost dry but not sure of how long it hadn't been checked!

They might claim that Information is their property and Data Protection means they can not show employee or previous car owners information.

The Car is your property and you have the right to the History even given that in 2010-2012 there were service books.

You as the driver / owners have the right to know the vehicles details and history etc. For your and others safety.

Skoda UK have played this game in the past and they are wrong.

The DVLA should have been informed of a New like for like engine being fitted and when.  You need to be able to answer questions if the Police ever ask having checked the car.

You want to know the Engine Spec.  Is it just an Original CAVE engine.  Was the ECU supplied with the new Engine.  (A 2010 ECU would not usually have needing replacing.)

When new engines were fitted the owners were told to Service the car by the cars miles from new and not treat the engine like it was New with new spark plugs, oil and filter.

I know from members in the past that asked Mitchel Skoda about replacement engines, were told they had no record now.

All the best with things.

?

Did you not look at the Header Tank level when buying the car & check the Oil Level?

The engine fitted might well have the Breather Mod and the latest software, it could even be remapped now.

It is not unusual that the engine replaced under warranty has been replaced again. Various members had cars like that.

Skoda UK and new engines.

Honesty is the best policy, and Dealership Staff & Customer Services staff forget that.

These are the plugs just removed 1-4 left to right VW AG NGK ones to me they just look like old plugs! Also it’s drank a bit more water since yesterday so might be a head gasket going doesn’t seem to be any oil/water mix in the engine or header but the sons Corsa VXR never had any either just a miss fire.

Booked in with my engine friend tomorrow so he can check the timing chain and head gasket but the water pump and supercharger bit got done last year.

Insulator on number three looks suspiciously clean, steam cleaned maybe.

Unlikely that steam cleaning would have cleaned it unless done with the Ignition Coils removed.

been in just over 10,000 miles son said number 1 was worst and 2 coil packs if that’s what you call them were split so he fixed those took it for a drive no miss fire and seemed smoother also upgraded air filter so it breathes better. In at garage tomorrow for head gasket test and chain looked at but pretty pleased so far fingers crossed there’s a split pipe or airlock but as long as it’s right for the wife that’s most important and it only stands me at £1500 atm well apart from plate and plugs lol thanks for all your replies and does anyone have email address for Skoda CS? Thanks

What is the upgraded air filter you have fitted?

Where was the Water Pump replaced at, and is there an Invoice & receipt?

Parts much cheaper now.

A steamed spark plug means it's burning water from a blown head gasket.

Not by a valet cleaning with a steam cleaner Captain Literal!

Looks like it is running pretty rich and at the right temp & not the usual one plug getting oiled & fouled & then cooked.

The one plug does still get hotter than the others,

Once the car has had the issues diagnosed, find where the coolant loss is from and have that rectified and it is running right it would be good to get it on 99 ron and once warmed up give it a good long run and get the engine hot and the plugs hot and then get them out and see what they look like.

eg. No3.

Quick update

garage said at 90 odd thousand miles and no history of the chain being replaced to get it done straight away so seeing as the wife took it down and the option was £100 plus fitting for chain or £200 for chain and VVT pulley she chose the cheap one! Got car back last week and started spluttering again EML light on with fault cam/crank position correlation so looked like timing was out so garage had it back and said until the VVT gets done there is no way the timing will be set right!
so VVT pulley was fitted on Thursday and I got a call just after 5 saying the fault had come back on and was spluttering again! Now we have a Skoda specialist coming down next week to solve the issues. Can anyone please offer anything to what they think is wrong? The garage said they did think the best option was a £5 can of petrol and a box of matches lol

Also the water leak wasn’t the water pump that we spent £100 on but was the radiator so I have a new one ready to fit if and when we get the bloody bag if **** back.

I don't see why they could not time it without the VVT.

It was not "out of time" before they did the chain was it............

Have they worked on these engines before ?
