Whats this in the storage compartment of the boot of my L&K

Was rooting around in the back of my new (to me) L&K superb.

 

In the left hand storage compartment on the boot there is a plastic box which is ducted into the vehicle.

 

What does it do? There is nothing in the hand book about.
